Antlers on a Plaque?
#1
Thought about mounting the antlers from a buck I killed this past year and was wondering if anyone has done a european mount themselves or mounted the antlers on a plaque? Anyone used the Iron Buck kit from Cabelas?

I have done several with the antlers on the plaque, not with the kit you mention, but I've used the ones at WalMart and they come out nice. Just make sure you clean the skull so it won't smell, I've found boiling and using salt work good.
Never done a euro-mount, I don't like the way they look

I have never done a Euro mount, though I have an antelope slated for that. After boiling completely clean (I think it was baking soda or something similar we added to the water to aid in getting tissue off) you go get some of the strong peroxide used on hair (not the weak disinfectant stuff). Wet paper towel with it and wrap the skull, this will bleach it nice and white. I have also seen people use an off-white glossy spraypaint and make it look nice.
I mount all my antlers from scratch, I was never happy with how the kits turn out. I simply drill 2 holes in the skullcap and screw it to a plaque I cut myself from whatever wood desired, sand/route/finished. Then I use multiple layers of drywall spackle to shape around the skullcap (you can only put it on so thick and have it dry right). Then I use deer leather carefully trimmed to cover this and nail to the plaque with upholstry tacks from Lowe's. This last step is the hardest part to make look right.

VAhuntr check out my post and picture of a nice antler I recently mounted on a wooden plaque.
It was very easy and saved me lots of space on the wall.
The wood is 1 5/8 inches thick Oak.
Good luck on your mount if you decide to do this.

I just posted how I did it in the Taxidermy Forum. The only thing I have left to do now is soak it in peroxide. It takes a few hours but Im liking the way it is turning out. Plus, on ebay I saw a guy who sells Euro mount placks from most states. I plan on putting my Michigan buck on one of those.

My apologies for posting this here. I forgot about the taxidermy forum. Might have had something to do with the Crown Royal!
mnnden, Looks like you did a real good job on your mount. Thanks for the responses.
