The deer isn't dead yet, so that can't be known.

However, people often "age" their deer and let it hang for a while. I like mine to hang in 39°-43° for about 3-6 days. A deer laying on it's side with the guts still in it, probably will have some spoilage in some parts of the meat in that time.

In my experience- most Blackpowder hit deer don't bleed out well unless its a double lung shot. I don't think you mentioned your load - I use a .44 XTP Pistol Bullet with a sabot - and a couple times over the years - I in general - 've had very poor blood trails high shots but found deer within 100 yds.

Hopefully the shot was over the spine - and if so - the deer will heal up without a care.

THis is the excat load I use, and I have shot deer where there was ZERO blood lost, until about 20 yards from where they crashed (she ran 100 total). If i hadnt seen them fall I woulda swore I missed.
