I like to hunt because of course im in the woods, its quiet, when im by myself it gives me alot of time to think about life, stress relief, and for the companionship of family and friends

For the joy I get just from being in the outdoors, in the woods. To me it is megestic and very tranquile.

Like being in a whole nother world. I enjoy the time and skills needed to harvest game. The scouting, the preparing and mystery of the hunt.

The camp life is a high point as well.

There' s several different things I like about hunting but it depends totally on the type of game. I like to hunt with all my senses on a full alert battle of wits with deer. The satisfaction of complete trickery of calling and decoying mallards. And the pure action of doves. Drumming and strutting turkeys are perhaps the most handsome in the field and delicious of all. And all of these with no more than 2 friends if any at all. I like being by myself or with smaller numbers of hunters.

There are many reasons why I love to hunt, trap or shedhunt. Always a lot to see and experience as I just like being outdoors. Unlike a lot of things, there is no one best way of doing it, nor do you have to always hunt solo or do you have to with others. It is an individaul choice with many ways of hunting, different animals and different areas. You can make it easy or hard. You are always learning about nature.

Bowhunting is my favorite. I like the solitude and being one one one with the deer. I can stillhunt the few shelterbelts, cornfields and abandoned farmsteads we have in this area in wet weather. Stalking deer is fun in crp or in late winter. Stand hunt from tree or ground with using the terrain as a natural blind when hunting on the ground. 90% of my bowhunting is on the ground. This fall might be different though as my 11 year old son is planning on bowhunting. Looking forward to that and we will hunt close enough together so I can keep an eye on him. Probably set up in the trees for the most part as it is easier to kill a deer in a tree stand then ground hunting but will also do some ground hunting as he had a blast last year tagging along with me. You should have seen how big his eyes got when we watch a 2.5 year 4pt (WC) rub on the branches of a downed tree. Now that not unusual but the downed tree was what we were using for our natural blind and the buck was rubbing 10 feet from him on the other side of the tree. The boy was pumped up to say the least after that but I was very proud as he didn' t move a muscle while the buck put the hurt to the tree. I finally had to move as the buck was coming around to Tyler' s side and I was about 20 yards from Tyler and getting a little nervous. Did I say I love hunting.

Rifle is fun and a change of pace from bowhunting. I like hunting solo, but also like walking on drives of 2-5 people that have hunted with us for years. Great time to get together as we don' t see a couple of them much during the year otherwise since they don' t live near here. Otherwise I stillhunt. stalk. tracking and always have a blast, great experiences and learn a few things. I have used what I learned from rifle hunting to bowhunt and visa-versa.

Shedhunting is a big time blast for my son and I. Great way to scout areas that are new or for checking out the old as all the sign is still there until green-up in the spring. Nice to know what bucks made it though the season by finding their sheds. The most important thing is being able to spend good quality time with my son and not only talk, teach and show him the ways of deer but also to just talk with him and teach him my values as life can get pretty hectic and you just don' t get the quality time with him that needs to be spent.

Trapping has taught me alot about animal sign and how to use it for figuring out an area for placing a trap for other critters. Although you can' t trap deer, taking what I have learned from reading sign of other animals and applying it to deer, it is a big help for hunting. You learn to pay attention to detail and scent control as both are a must for trapping or deer hunting.

Sorry this got a little winded but you asked the question.

For me it' s the solitude . Away from the noises of work and home , restful quiet and peace . It also gets me out of the " honey do" list for awhile .

OK, this may sound corny but it' s true.

I like to hunt because of the peace and solitude of sitting in the forest for a week. Hearing the crows wings as they fly overhead and the amount of noise a squirrel can make!

I like to hunt because I have a wife and two kids (one more on the way ) and it' s a special freedom to get away for a week!

I like to hunt because I feel proud of the freedom of our countries (Canada and the US) that allow us to carry around high powered rifles without fear of arrest.

I like to hunt because I love the taste of wild game. With our recent mad cow scare in Alberta, I' m glad I have freezer full of venison.

I like to hunt because I feel I owe it to my father and grandfather. For them, hunting was a way of life and I feel that if new hunters aren' t recruited, tree huggers may be successful.

I like to hunt to experience the relationships with my fellow hunters that I would never have met except for our annual get together.

That' s it.....off the soapbox

P.S. To the treehuggers, notice that I did not metion the thrill of the kill at all

Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes just in time to have the cold pre-dawn air hit me in the face.

Walking in in the dark.

Listening to the quiet before the sun comes up... maybe broken by a deer snorting or an owl catching a mouse, maybe not.

Feeling the first ray of the sun hit the back of my neck, just when I was sure I was going to freeze to death waiting for dawn.

Having an entire morning with no deer around, just so I can situate my thoughts.

Having an entire morning swarmed under with deer.

Seeing that buck just as shooting light begins.

Seeing that buck just before I was about to get down out of my stand.

Watching the birds, the squirrels, the armadillos, the raccoons, the turkeys....

Still-hunting, never knowing what the next tree is going to bring you.

Watching the world slowly go to sleep as daylight fades.

Walking out in the dark.

Sitting around with the guys.

Getting a handshake for a good day hunting.

Chowing down on the stew, the chili, the backstrap...

Falling asleep at 8:30 in a sleeping bag.

Sigh

Oh, and Taxman - I' d avoid using the term ' treehugger' for what you mean. Technically, I' m a treehugger - I' d love for us to keep virgin forests standing and preserve the wilderness. I believe the term you' re looking for is ' psycho PETA nazi,' or something along those lines.

Right you are Fl/GA Hunter. I didn' t mean to lump true tree huggers with those animal rights folks. My deepest apologies!

I like to hunt mainly to get away from everyday life, to be out in the woods or on the edge of a water hole just waiting and listening contently thinking about nothing but what I will do when whatever it is I' m hunting shows up. Also I feel like I have done something when I we are sitting around the dinner/supper table eating what I have worked so hard to kill. Hunting is awesome you can' t beat it!!
