Feeder Advice Needed

I am thinking about buying a couple mechanical tripod feeders for our property in OH. but have never used them before.

The 1st. reason is that we are doing a trail cam survey in July and if I just dump corn on the ground the million turkeys we have will just eat it all up in a couple of days and mechanical feeders will provide bait thru out the survey.

And the 2nd reason is we currently have a couple guys that use them for hunting with out much success as far as mature bucks goes but one guy had this huge buck use his feeder every day for 3 weeks during shooting hours in Oct. until the feeder was empty.
Unfortunatly for the guy he didn't hunt at all until the last couple days of Oct. but by that time the buck had moved on since the feeder was no longer providing him with an easy meal every day.

My concern is that my spots are already good with out baiting (other than mineral blocks) and im worried that noisy unnatural mechanical feeders might hurt my spots more than help them as far mature bucks frequenting my area's. I don't care if the feeders don't draw in a huge buck like in the pics (though it would be nice) because im sure that buck is the exception to the rule but I just don't want the feeders to hurt my chances of getting pics of MATURE bucks and seeing them in my area's during the season. Thanks for any advice, Pike

Having used feeders for 30 yrs in Texas I can tell you the noise will not bother any animal. As far as Deer, Turkey and hog go, it's a good attractant when the feeder goes off. Being about half deaf, when I see the birds at the feeder flush, I know a larger animal is coming in to feed. You also can judge an animal and be more selective on your harvest. You can also take some good pictures. If you have Hogs be sure to use T posts to stake your feeder down or the Hogs will turn it over and distroy it.

the rack on the buck in the first picture looks backwards, looks like you can see the skull plate

crokit your an idiot!! its the same buck in all 3 pics and not photo shopped.
Here is another pic of it. Every time someone makes a post about using a feeder, bait, mineral block etc you got to make some stupid comment.

White Falcon thanks for your advice. Pike

My My filthy, testy lil' lady, aren't ya! Just saying the first pic looks like skull plate is showing. Doesn't mean it is, filthy, but looks like it, to me.

Just not used to looking at deer on bait piles and feeders. One thing I am curious about: What is the purpose of the camo attempt with the feeder? Obviously the deer see it. Human eyes??

You sure are a brave man calling someone a lady from the safety of your PC.[:'(] And for the record I have never used a feeder or bait pile, thats why
im asking for advice! I have yet to see you post anything that makes the words "" DEER""" or """" HUNTER""" come to mind about you, only smart comments about pics other members have posted etc. and using minerals, baiting etc., Why dont you post some of your pics and share with everyone here instead? And why do your panties always get in a bunch when others hunt using different methods than you? And more important, who lied to you and made you believe that any body actually cares about your opinion?
I mean we are talking deer and hunting, not subjects like whether or not you and your life parnter should be able to enter into a gay marriage etc.
As far as the feeder being painted camo, I have no idea??? Its not mine, I dont own one, yet. Pike
P.S. crockit you have great weekend and please keep in mind that its
Adam & Eve not Adam & Steve.

feel free to PM or for everyone to hear, makes no diff. to me, for a friendly meet and greet rather " than the safety of the pc." I get down to Pa- Spring crk, Bellfonte, and Erie once a week. Bring a lunch. It'll be fun.

Sorry to disappoint you J Piker, but I don't need the hunting world to verify whether I am a hunter or not. Been doing fine on my own thank you, but I appreciate your concerns. No, really, I'm serious, I do!

Piker: obviously, the actual HUNTING of deer isn't your only phobia. Not quite sure why you would choose this thread to show the world your bigotry, but things like that ARE exposed in the damnest of places,eh!

Given your occupation as a mortgage co. owner, as well as your obvious bias', I'll bet a good attorney would have a field day checking on lending practices/trends in your area.

That first picture (when you enlarge it) sure looks like the rackis mounted to the feeder?kinda cute tho. Here in Wi. its illegal to use but for bear its ok noise doesn't bother the animals. My buddy baited bear and when he put the bait down he would blow his car horn, opening day he blew the horn and the critters all came a runnin:D. After deer pattern the noise it attracts them

Redclub: I've seen/observed same reaction in the Adirondacks. I have a friend who hunts in a remote area above Saranac Lake, where controlled logging is allowed. He fires-up a chain saw for a few seconds, first thing in morning, and sets back on the ready for deer coming in looking for fresh browse.

Red Club thanks for the info! But as the rack looking like it is mounted to the feeder, I dont see it, the buck has 3 points cooming off the base of his left antler. Pike

Does'nt surprise since there aren't bait/mineral block stores near those places!
I'll work on a more reasonable halfway point. State college looks to be more like a halfway point From Elmira/York. I'll be sure to bring my manure spreader. I've always enjoyed tipping over chithouses. I'll work on freeing up a few minutes on my schedule

LMAO Yeah, I've been shakin' in my boots. My wife and I just had a good laugh about all this, and how a 39-40 yr. old is going to explain to C. what happened to him after meeting a 57 yr. old Ranger. You know how it goes sometimes after meeting new friends. I got to tell ya right now, it will be a HOOT. I am really looking forward to it.

Nice and rural out State College ways. Fishin's great. How's your Wensdays look? The only thing I ask is for you to leave your white hooded robe home.

Got to head out to the Delaware for the evening bite. Let me know what works for ya, Piker. Enough of the childnish, juvey stuff. { I know you'll find that next to impossible }. Drop me a line.

The only person acting childish and juvey is you, all you do is troll on this board.
As far as driving 3 hours to State College, im not going to waste my time drving to meet someone that is scared to even post his name and pic on a message board because I will just get stood up!
You have my name, address and phone # which you can verify at
www. white pages.com, just let me know when and I will free up time for you.
Cant do it next weekend because I will be busy setting up my new Feeder thanks to the info provided by Red Club & White Falcon.
Cant wait to meet ya.Pike

It wasn't about killing each other, it was about getting some rec. { love that smiley } Either way, my wife said " you guys need to grow up ". Sometimes, but not often enough, I tend to listen to her.

Easy sallies ;)

As far as im concerned,

Steroids kill basbeall stats

Feeders kill hunting stats

Everyone should get at * next to the buck they kill from a feeder. Just MY opinion.

To those who took the time to give advice, thank you very much!!
To those were offended by crokit and my bickering back and fourth, I apologize!! I guess by using my real name instead of a handle I take things too personal some times.

Siman, you are welcome to your opinion but I dont remember asking for your opinion, but being from PA. I tend to agree with you. Infact 28 of our 35 members are from PA. and in 9 years not one of them ( I would be the 1st. :D ) ever used bait / feeder etc., to hunt over. Infact currently only 5 of our members have used bait/feeders over the years (nothing wrong with them doing so in my opinion since it is legal in the state of OH., and who am I to tell someone else how they should enjoy the sport)
and they are from OH. & NJ.
I guess what I am trying to say is that the 27 other members of my club from PA. and most are friends of mine share your opinion on this subject and I am currently still on the fence on not wether or not I will use a feeder this year during hunting season. But I definately am going to put it up this weekend to help get more pics:D Pike

RE: Feeder Advice Needed

I used to put corn out in front of my cameras all the time. I ended up stopping for a bunch of reasons.

Alot (actually, most) of my friends hunt over bait. And i give them a hard time but its all for fun, im not going to tell you that a legal hunting method is wrong. I personally don't do it though. I take pride in the way i hunt, but its only for personal satisfaction.........

.......One of the main reason i find hunting over bait so irksome is the fact that a 9 year old kid or a 68 year old man with ZERO experience or hunting ability could set up on one and kill a booner buck. Which does happen, ALOT, here in Ohio. Then you have to hear everyone and their brother saying how awesome of a hunter that person is for the next 5 years. Is the person a good hunter, hell no. Are they lucky and in the right place at the right time? Yes, and i understand it could happen to anybody in any hunting situation. But something in that picture just bothers me. Ive been confronted by these people hundreds of times, and they all laugh at how i don't kill monster bucks like they do. But truth be told, if you told them that they couldn't hunt over bait then they would just stop hunting altogether, because they would never see a deer and get bored after 2 hours. I take pride in my ability to set up on deer and take does and pass on multiple bucks a year without bait. Thats just my personal feeling. Am i a good hunter? Not at all. Ive only been doing this seriously for 3 years, but do i think im better then the bait guys, most definitely. (And i understand that thier is different reasons for baiting...i direct this to the "weekend warriors" who dont even know what the word scouting or planning mean, besides riding the ATV to the feeder with a bucket of corn).

Once again, this is only how i feel about the matter, and its not meant to offend anybody. I like to dish out my opinion on certain matters when i have a chance.

Rant over :D

J Pike 05-27-2009 09:06 PM

RE: Feeder Advice Needed

Siman thanks for the advice, My last trip out I put corn in front of one of my cams just to see how the deer would react to it, just trying to fiqure out if using a feeder etc. would be worth the hard time im going to be getting from the other guys. So far the 5 guys in our club that use feeders have not harvested 1 buck that we would consider to be a shooter, and the only good buck they got on camera was the one I posted in my first pic., so, so far I havent seen any advantages as far as mature bucks go put to to kill a doe or an inmature buck would be like shooting fish in a barrell.
And god forbid If I would ever decide to use a crossbow:D I dont have any desire to unless I would ever get injured but even then I would get tared and feathered. ( But dont get me wrong I dont feel that I should have an opinion on a hunter that decides to use a crossbow either since they are also legal in OH.) Pike
