Just twist the skull off the spine and leave the hide there it' s pretty much worthless now.

Yep, and any flesh, skin on the skull that you want off...this time of year find a nice ant hill, place the skull/antlers right over it, cover with a 5 gal. plastic bucket and check it in a couple of weeks. The ants will do a very nice job of cleaning it for you.

P.S. If you live where other critters or dogs can get to it, put a heavy rock or weight on the bucket end so they cannot over turn it.......

Like Christine suggest works well or you can also soak the skull in a pail of water with some salt for about day or 2. This will allow you to skin off the remain hide on the skull.

Just peel all the hide off and scrape the meat off as best as you can. If you can clean the skull up pretty good and boil it, it looks pretty good like that. Use a little bleach or peroxide in the water and it makes the skull nice and white. Boiling also makes it a little easier to scrape off any little bits of meat that' s left. Make sure you don' t get the antler bases in the boiling solution or they will turn white too!

If you don' t want the whole skull, cut straight back through the eyes on a line that would end up behind the ears. Then you can boil and clean up this piece of skull.

You can wrap some foam around the skull plate and then cover it with some nice felt or leather pulled tight and sewn together. Take your time doing this and get all the wrinkles out. It can be a pain in the a$$. Then mount it to a plaque. Just drill through the skullplate and insert your bolts before wraping and covering the skull plate. Use two bolts so the whole thing doesn' t spin around on the plaque.

I think you can also get kits that help you mount antlers onto a plaque. Check out Cabela' s or your local sporting goods store.

Good luck!

i am just going to go with the ant idea. i tried doin it myself and it was hard. the fur left on was like leather and wouldnt come off. and didnt feel like boilin it and then i got to the brain and yuck[X(][X(][X(]. it stunk real bad. it was gross for me and it has to be prty bad to gross me out. but i got the brain(what was left of it. basically it was a pile of rotting pink stuff.) and washed it out with the spray hose. then i was thinkin about it and i was just going to set it on the fence and let the flys get to it. but then i remembered the ant idea and that we have a huge ant pile out in one of our pastures by our house so tommarow i will take it out there. they should clean it right to the bone. thn i think i am just going to mount it to a peice of nice wood thats stained. i will take a pic of it when i am all done and post it. thnks for the info guys
