Let' s hope that it can stay contained to the general area. I tell ya, some areas local to the eradication zone were carrying 100 deer per sq mile...that in itself is bad news.
I hunt about as far away as you can get from this area in southern Wi and truely feel sorry for the people who are seeing their deer being shot off...hopefully for a good reason. There are still alot of unknowns surrounding CWD. Many theories, but the hard true facts are hard to come by.

Do nothing and see how long it takes to double again. [:' (] I' ve lived a year in the E zone, I know what the people in the new area are feeling.
Lets face it, we said if exstensive testing showed it was confined to a relatively small area and not state wide, we would act. Its as confined as its gonna get. I suppose one could just stop answering the phone on friday nights once the test results come. Both my calls came on a friday. My buddies came on friday. My neighbors came on friday. Ever get any really bad news over the phone? Kind of like what I imagine the cancer patient feels when he gets the call from his doctor. Do nothing and we' ll see how long it takes to come to your happy hunting grounds. Just don' t freekin cry to me when it does.

As for baiting; I read today that, in every instance where a deer was orally given CWD prions, they developed CWD. Baiting encourages mouth to mouth, and nose to nose contact. It was just increasing the risk of CWD and other disease. I didn' t bait, and I' m not gonna miss it. As far as I' m concerned, scents and lures should go too. Until they can assure us they don' t come from infected captive cervids, they should go. Use an artificial lure or scent if you must, most the **** out there is junk anyways.

W&M: You must of posted while I was typeing. The DNR has admitted they over estimated the size of the herd around here. They first claimed up to 30,000 deer need to be shot for eradication. They counted them with a helicopter and good snow cover after the regular season. Now they say there may have only been 15-17,000. Not 30K. Point is, the DNR never was any good at counting deer with SAK.
Welcome to the board by the way. Good to have ya around CHEESEHEAD!

I' m originally from wisconsin, now living in Colordo, and I applaud Wisconsin for this decision. Here in Colorado the game and fish heads are pretty much sticking there heads in the sand and hoping this will all go away some day. Of course over the years it has spread from one little corner of the state to a much more alarming 1/5th to 1/6th of the state. The Wisconsin DNR might not be able to count deer, but they have taken a aggresive approach to trying to fix the problem, like no other state. I know that people in the erradicarion zone aren' t going to like this, but better now before it' s spread through the whole state. My .02 cents

Nub,
Unfortunately the ban of feeders will not take care of this problem. Why? Becouse of what you said, " Baiting encourages mouth to mouth, and nose to nose contact." does not go far enough. Deer are VERY social animals, they feed together, they bed together, Drink, and even in the act of breeding this contact happens.
Im not going into the debate on feeding vs baiting, but, just how do they plan on stoping them from doing all the things that come natural to them?
I understand this is caused from a virus. These bugs are some times very hard to kill. In surgery we must run our instruments for a minumum time of 4 min. at a temp of 275 Deg. F. under presure, (cant think of the pounds right off) to make sure we kill these little things.
Another thing. A very deadly virus to dogs is the Parvo virus. Vets recomend that your dog died of parvo that you not get another on for X amount of time becouse thay can catch the virus form being in the house or yard. If you are going to do it anyway they recomend that you spray everything in the yard and even in the house with a bleach solution.
So even if they stop the things that come natural, which they cant execpt by killing all of them, this little bug can stick around for a while. How do they plan on cleaning things up?
Seems to me that some labs need to be working overtime trying to come up with a way that can kill the bug but not the deer. Then add it to the food and water chain for them and what would be an easy way to do this? What about feeders[
].
No matter what you feel about them feeders are not the bottom line problem, so this ban will amount to about nothing on the fix the problem scale.
Stuck,
Unfortunately there is no good way to do this. What kind of population are they talking about in this " Zero Area" vs number of hunters? I think the answer they are looking for is " Time" How long would it take for these hunters to remove the deer population vs Goverment hunters + modern methods. [:' (]
Take care,
Rick

Who: You really should read up on CWD. Not trying to quarrel here but it takes a hell of a lot more heat to destroy the prions than the temps your used to. No, we can not stop all the activity like breeding and some of the others you mentioned, but we can stop some. If you have a few hours to kill try going here and also the related links. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/...th/issues/Cwd/ Learn what we' re living with.
