I live in TN. I have a rather large field on my property that boarders a public road. I need the most cost effective and efficient option for shielding this field from the road. It is a prime area where spot lighters can poach. What is my best option. I was thinking about cane, but don't know where you can get it. Any ideas?

Have you checked with the Arbor Day Foundation? I think that if you plant em alot of times they just give them to ya. Not for sure though. I'd think pine or cedar trees would work. People that live in the country around here use them to wind block their homes.

I'd go with pine trees like mentioned above. I'm no tree expert but Red Pines grow pretty fast and will grow just about anywhere. If it were me I would plant them so they are staggered slightly. But how big is the field? That could get expensive if you had to plant a lot of them.

leland cypress, they grow the fastest.

Hemlocks and spruce are droopy branched trees, not sure if you have them down your neck of the woods.
But if people can't see the field it might help provide shelter for the poachers???[:@]

Any kind of pines would probably best your best shot.

You might try planting a line of fast growing tall shrubbery such as Russian olive or hybrid willow, or evergreen such as thuja,with a deep barrier strip of briars behind them to deter foot traffic from the road. The most effective thing you can plant in the long run will be "POSTED" signs backed with a barrier strip of successful prosecutions for trespassing.

If you just let it grow up, it will be tall enough by the fall...We took some of our land out of production for this very reason...

In your area I would either use Red Cedar or Virginia Pine.

And while you're waiting for those trees to mature and fill in, I'd recommend about 6 rows of corn.
