RE: Neighbor's dog shot
ORIGINAL: WNYhunter Phil From Maine, no I haven't shot a dog yet. But when is enough going to be enough. My nieghbors dog has chewed on 2 ofMY deer, sh$ts inMY yard, barks at us inMY year, constantly running in MY woods, and has followed me into the treestand in the mornings and barked at me for quite awhile. Funny thing is, I had a nice talk with them after the first deer (which the dog was eating a hind quarter before I even found it, in the middle of MY woods) and they didn't listen. Finally when the 2nd deer was chewed on hanging in MY barn I had to have another talk with them. This was not so nice, and I told them "I pay money to hunt, money for land to hunt not so thier dog can have free riegn. If I ever catch your dog in the woods I will shoot it". That message got through to them. Isn't it sad some dog owners don't feel they have to respect your property, that dog still does everything he did before in MY yard but they keep him locked up during deer deason. And I will say it again, it is 100% not the dogs fault in any case. So, you tell me. when is enough, enough |

So, you tell me. when is enough, enough I knowI do not take them on private property with one exception and that is land I am taking care of for my grandpaprents. They loved to watch him work in the field out back. That was until they had to go in the nursing home last spring. As Mentioned by B.C. this is not the issues we are dealing with most on here.. |

WNYhunter
You have asked me a question and I answered it. I have asked you a question as well could you please answer that for us. What have you done besides discus this issue with the owner? Did you go to any of your town meetings to discuss this issue of a dog running loose all the time and barking at you on your own property? Exactly what did you do besides confront the owner/s? |
RE: Neighbor's dog shot
Had 2 dogs mess me up on a big buck this season and i was beat red mad,but the dogs were not doing nothing illegal just running around.still i think people should keep there dogs in in hunting season.

RE: Neighbor's dog shot
Well you got me there. I haven't been to the town about the situation. I thought talking to the nieghbor would be good enough. And isn't it to bad that it took me getting angry, threatening to shoot thier dog before they listened, kind of. In our town dogs are allowed to roam, these people bought a house in the country so they could have dogs and let them run.
Now as far as the original post, I think everyone had the old "how dare they shoot a dog, and I would kick thier a$$, and felony this and that". So I offered up a different idea. Mabey his dog was always out, mabey his dog was brought home by the other guy numerous times, we don't know. the sad thing is, and I will say it again is ,,,, it is never the dogs fault. I have never shot a dog, but when is enough, enough. |
RE: Neighbor's dog shot
That is where we are different as here it is not only a town law to keep dogs tied up. It is a state leash law as well. Also all dogs must be liscensed requiring that they have rabbie shots up to date as well. So it sounds like it is alot easier for us to get dogs under control here.
But if enough of you folks down in your area complains enough I am sure measures would be adopted to help every one out. Yes here if some one shot my dog they would most deffinately end up in court over it. I have way to much invested in them to just let someone shoot them. Yes, they will break loose from time to time and I will get them as soon as I notice them out of the kennel. If I am working the wife will try and get them back as well. We do not just let our dogs run loose up here. Some on here has stated they would shoot one the minute they saw it running by them. We hunt up here and bird hunting with dogs is allowed during deer season as well. It's not a real big problem as we all hunt on paper company lands for the most part. They have large amounts of land that are free to use if you want to. It is a shame that they have to dig out some roads due to the fact that some will dump pick-up trucks of garbage out in them. But that doesn't mean that all hunters are doping that either.. |

RE: Neighbor's dog shot
I love dogs and I love my dogs....I would never shoot a dog, domestic, or wild....Thats just me...There r alot of country dogs roaming around and there chasing deer etc...But thats just what they do...I dont think we should shoot them...Capture them maybe......Tell local owners but shooting them is a little extreme to me....Personally I think its selfish to shoot a dog cause they messed up ur deer hunt...If its wild that some what acceptable But if its domestic and has a owner...Theres no reason...Now if the dog is a danger to yourself or other hunters it would be best to shoot them...Im sorry I cant do it and I dont think its right..Thats my opinion

RE: Neighbor's dog shot
ORIGINAL: brushbuck28 Wow, what a mess. Lot of hotheads on here and also alot that make sense. I have GPS, he loves to hunt.Is he 100% trained? No. If he runs off is it my fault? YES!!! Do I want him shot? NO!!! It is my reponsibility as a dog owner to control my animal and see to his care and well being. Would I leave him in the woods to let him roam?NO. I wouldn't let anybody under my care spend a night alone where they don't belong and would do everything in my power to get them back safely. Saying this I have found bear dogs that have had thier collars go dead and have brought them out to the nearest town to call their owners(very greatful owners) and they come right out and get them. I would hope anyone who found my dog before I did would do me the same courtesy. And between all the other predators out there, why shoot a dog??? There are far more wolves, coyotes, bears, bobcats ect.. that have a greater impact on YOUR deer. Get a small game/ pedator lisence if you feel like shooting a predator. If it is a known dog and a nusiance animal call the athorities (pound, cops) and let them decide it's fate. People need to take reponsibility for thier pets and keep them safe. If they let them run they obviously don't care. Notice I said "let them run "not OMG! my dog got loose!!! There are too many possibilities as to what can happen to a loose pet: hit by car, ate by wolves poisioned, caught in trap, tangled in barbwire ect.. If you love something take care of it.If you don't ,don't haveit. I vote on the common sense side of this argument. |
