Texas Hill Country 9 Point

A very poor photo of a buck I shot last weekend. This guy had had a very, very rough year. 4 1/2 year old buck, with decent headgear (particularly considering that our lease has been in drought conditions for the last two seasons) but, he weighed only 90 pounds. You could run your hand down his back and feel every single vertebra. When I got him to the skinning rack, we found a healed bullet wound, probably from last season, that entered behind the rib cage and just under the spine. And, his rear legs had numerous small, bleeding cuts and, we concluded that he must have gotten hung up in a barb wire fence and had just recently got loose.
He came into the field at about 5:00 p.m. walking from my right to my left. He had a nice looking rack, but something just looked wrong about him. I took aim at his left shoulder and squeezed. He reeled around and went about ten yards and stood, with his back arched up like an angry housecat. I figured maybe my shot had gone awry, so, aimed at his right shoulder and squeezed again. He took off toward the woods. I waited a few minutes, and went after him. He had folded up after about 10 yards. Autopsy revealed that the second shot wouldn't have been necessary. Both shots were heart/lung. He was dead after the first, and just didn't know it yet.
