Took this buck with an H&R Ultra Slug 20 gauge. Many nice guns to choose from in that price range. Go to a gun store and handle them all and shoot if possible and get the one you like. Anymore with the barrels and slugs out there, you can find a combo that will get the job done.

LOL Good point on the guns though. There are alot of good guns. I do like the H&R and have only heard good things about them. Never shot one though.
BTW
Here is mine from last year 80 yard off hand shot.

just curious, whats ur logic with this??

For a dedicated slug gun a H&R Slug Hunter would hit in your price range and would do a lot better job than the 870.

I'm not dissing any other shotgun out there, just stating that it would be easier to get better accuracy at longer ranges withoneof the H&R slug gunsthan with an 870, or pretty much any other pump or auto out there.

RE: slug gun
I have a Rem. 870 12G as well. Great shotgun. I prefer, however, my bolt-action Marlin 512 slugmaster. It's hard to beat a bolt-action for accuracy. I can hit the same hole at 100 yards with the Marlin. I got mine off of gunbroker for about $300. The only drawback I see with the Marlin is that it is heavier and kicks harder than the 870 (but not that bad).

RE: slug gun
I have three right now, 870, 1187, and a Mossberg 500. If I was to buy one today it would be the H&R USH in 20 gauge due to the comments I've been hearing about it. Matter of fact I've only been hunting with my muzzleloaders the last two years. I'm ready to sell my barrels for the 1187 and Mossberg and get a USH.

Savage 10 ML ll.
I know, I know, its not a slug gun, but I've never seen a 300 yd slug gun, or a slug gun shoot under 1" groups. Dont overlook ML'sif you are worried aboutrange. The black and blue one goes for about $500.

RE: slug gun
20ga has less recoil, and less downrange energy (800ft/lb@200yds in 20ga vs 1200ft/lbs@200yds for the 12ga sst slugs)
But seeing how 200 yds is pushing the envelope for slugs anyway, that may not be a real disadvantage. I would not want to go any lower than 800 ft/lbs for deer.
Its been rumored that 20ga slugs are more accurate, which was proven wrong by outdoor life this fall.
