One of my favorite lines is from the ballad of Davy Crockett, “Kil’t him a bear when he was only 3 …” We’ll Hunter is 4, but he did make his first kill on Saturday. It was a whitetail doe instead of a bear, but you would have thought it was the biggest deer in Texas from the smile on his face. After telling his story to the whole family, he made the statement, “THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE.” I may have just created a monster. He assured me he was going hunting with me from now on. He killed the 110# doe withmy older sons.223.

More of the story ...
Hunter had shot a rifle with a scope before, but he had not shot the .223. We went to target practice, but he wouldn’t shoot. He said he couldn’t keep the scope still enough (which is probably true – he’s a perfectionist), but I think he was a little scared of it, too. After about 30 minutes we decided to head out. I told him if we saw a hog or a coyote, I would shoot it for him. When we got to the stand we saw a small 6-point before the two doe stepped out. He asked if he could look at them through the scope, and I said OK. After a few seconds he said, “ I can hold it steady on her.” I asked if he was sure and he said yes. I told him I would take the safety off but that he would have to make sure and squeeze the trigger so it wouldn’t come off her shoulder. He said OK so I eased it off and placed his pointer finger and middle finger on the trigger slowly. I reminded him to squeeze the trigger and watched his tinyknuckles slowly turn white. The gun went off and she hit the ground. She kicked and bleated, but he just smiled.
