Default Whitetail Point Count

In a recent conversation with a westerner, we were discussing deer size ( racks ). In the east we count all the points to describe the size of a bucks rack. In the west they count only one side. ie: a 10 point buck in the east becomes a 5 point in the west. An off number of points is usually referred to as a 4x5 or a 3x4.

How did the difference in counting points between east and west come to be ??

Thanks in advance for your input.

I'm not sure how it came about, but here in SoDak we call it a 5 by 6. Or a 6 by 5.

Rob - That one I know. If it were evenly matched (5 points on the left and 5 points on the right = 10 points ) by western count he is a 5 point. By eastern count he is a 10 point.

BTW - nice buck. Congrats.

Well we would call it a 5 by 5 or a 6 by 6 also.

Well in my experience living on both sides, deer in the West (mule, blacktails) tend to be more typical. But the whitetails of the east tend not to be as even, hence why you see a lot of 7pts 9pts and so forth or a 10pt with a 6X4. It happens a lot more with whitetails then it does with Mulies and Blacktails. Now i have shot mule deer that dont match and then they just say5X6. I really dont have the exact reason, thats just the way i see it.
