A .270 Sucks????
I've been shopping around for a new rifle lately, finally picked out one, a Remington Model 700 CDL. I've been hunting with a .243 for ten years and I love that caliber, but I figured theres no sense in buying the same caliber so I was looking at a .270 instead. Well, whenever I told the guy at my local gun store to order me a .270, he goes into a rant about how that caliber is horrible and that it has the highest percentage of lost deer of any centerfire caliber. Surely this isn't true? I know quite a few people who hunt with a.270 and I've never heard about that.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
no, it's not true. It's great for deer. If he said that maybe he lost a deer, or several, with a .270

RE: A .270 Sucks????
No offence to the guy who gave you the info but for a gun dealer I would say it is a pretty dumb response. Though the .270 is not my #1 deer rifle I do own one and have harvested a number if deer with it without any difficulties. I think the saying "It not the gun but the gunner" is my opinion on why deer are lost after being shot.

RE: A .270 Sucks????
My father in law has shot over 50 deer with his 270 and dropped them on the spot with one shot, some over 100 yards. Id take my business elswhere, no gun smith should ever say whats good or bad unless you ask for his personal opinion, he should order adn sell what you requested. The guy more than likely doesnt knwo crap about hunting or guns. Hes an idiot.

RE: A .270 Sucks????
If that were my gunshop, that employee would be fired. The 270 is an excellent deer caliber. Like others said...lost game is a shooter problem, not a gun problem. You cannot go wrong with a 270. There are other excellent calibers too.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
You want a good debate bring this up in hunting camp.:D
I personally am not a 270 fan. I have owned a few of them over the years. All of them would get hot after 4 rounds and stay that way. I believe there is better deer calibers out there like the 308 and 30.06. I own a 25.06 that will do everything plusand kill them just as dead as a 270. |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
Sadly the vast majority of people who own or work at gun or sporting goods stores these days don't know much more than the general public about the things they sell. And like the general public they are prone to wildly varying and oftenbadly flawedopinions about things.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 270 as a deer rifle. Probably one of the two most popular calibers for whitetails in America. The other beingthe 30-06. If you do your job properly a deer will never fail to die because you were shooting a 270. I'd take my business elsewhere. |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
How about a 7mm-08?

My Dad with a .270 - Any questions? It's the only caliber he's ever regularly used and I can't tell you how many deer have fallen by one of the two he's owned. I prefer the 30/06. but I can't deny the success he's had. |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
I use to do a lot of long range tactical sooting and in that time I have used(and tinkered with) a lot of calibers. The .270 will more than do the job. The guy that told you this really doesn't have any idea what he is talking about.
jrbsr, reguarding the 7mm-08, that round was geting real popular when I got out of lr-shooting. I had one for a short while and loved it. |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
The employee is sprobably one of those idiots that has killed 2 deer (both does)with a .300 Weatherby, therefore nothing else will stop a deer type idiots.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
I love my 270...lost ONE....it was a non lethal shot anyway.I took a bad shot, poor judgement on my part. Shot it just above the knee, barely grazing it. Flesh wound.

RE: A .270 Sucks????
That is why if I am buying a gun I much rather buy it from a large store like Wal-Mart, Gander, Dick's sporting goods, etc. They will sell you whatever you want without giving you much lip about it. Some people rave about supporting the small shops but from my experience they know just as little as the teenager at Wal-Mart. The small shops push the stuff they have in stock just so they could get rid of it and tell you all sorts of stories on how much better it is than the product you really came in to the store to buy. I knew exactly what gun I wanted before I ever went into a store to buy it, so the gunshop salesmans suggestions are of no relevance to me. Thus I rather buy from a large store where the prices most likely will be better.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
i am not against buying a gun anywhere to be honest. I just think that if you are buying a gun you should know what questions to ask and be prepared. I often see people buying a gun with NO experience. With the resources available today on the internet you can really get educated and know when you are listening to a dummy try to sell you on a gun.
the .270 is a great round for deer. many people in our camp use it. I however and very partial to the 7mm-08. LOVE that caliber for deer. |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
i shoot a 270 wsm and never lost a deer yet.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
That guy is an clueless. F&S recently did a poll with outfitters on hunter stats and gear the the majority said the .270 was the best deer rifle follewed very closely by the 30-06. If that guy thinks that the 270 some how inhearently is a bad deer rifle he doesn't know much about ballistics and bullets. How could a round between a 243 and a 300 win mag be the only bad egg.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
I bought my first .270 three years ago, I have used it for 2 hunting seasons going on my third and shot 5 deer with it. Four of those five deer dropped right away, the other one ran about 50 yards and then dropped. I think that it is a great caliber for deer.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
the .270 is a perfect whitetail round. Without knowing this guy my first thought is that he is one of those "real men shoot big magnums" type of guys. Perhaps he was just trying to talk you into buying a more expensive magnum rifle. Do they get commission for their sales there? never trust the advice of a man working on commission
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
that guy is full of you know what. i've killed deer with bow and arrow, muzzle loader, handgun, and five different rifles chambered for four different cartridges. each of these types of weapons have one thing in common to do their job effectively. proper"SHOT PLACEMENT". there areno magic bullets or cartridges. but, there are many that are very effective when proper"SHOT PLACEMENT" occurs. the .270 is still around and is very popular for a reason. because it's one of the greatest deer hunting cartridges that one can buy.
i hunt with two guys that hunt with 30-06's and they have lost deer. was it the cartridges fault? absolutely not. poor shot placement and bad tracking skills (tracking too soon) were to blame. |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
Im 4 for 4 with my 270 2 of which fell where they stood...lol probaly be 6 for 6 here in a few short weeks....I was 3 for 3 with my open sight 30-06 as well. I can assure you that not every shot i have taken has been perfect, but i always have been able to recover the deer. Taking bad shots with any gun can result in a loss. 270 is a perfect gun for whitetail.
On another note 7mm-08 is a awesome short action caliber for whitetails. Friend of mine has a model 7 in 7mm-08 and it is just devistating with 140gr Nosler Partitions. Ill eventually add one to my collection as well. |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
Whoever told you that needs a sack punch, thats the only caliber I use for deer, whitetails and mule deer. Perfect gun IMO. Sure people like different guns, My friends and family use 30-06, 7 MM and such, but for someone to say a .270 is a bad gun is a moron. Personally, I would never go back to that store, seems like they have little knowledge on hunting.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
Theres two type of people in this world, those loyal to the .270 and those loyal to the 30.06. I use my 30.06 when im hunting brush i load 165HPBT Sierra Gamekings. I use my .270 when i hunt fields and i use a lighter load 150gr Spitzer BT. As for nockdown and accuracy its all in ur ammunition. I just got a .270 Remington CDL SF. And it is a awesome gun. If ur looking at that one then get it, the new trigger and the recoil pad on it is great.

RE: A .270 Sucks????
I've been using a .270 with 150gr core lokt shells for 15yrs. Awsome for whitetails.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
Can you give me this dealers name... If he thinks a 270 sucks then maybe he'll buy this bridge in the desert i've got for sale
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
My Dad and I both shot .270 calibers. Never lost a deer that was shot with it.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
I have used a .270 for 15 years. Only lost 1 deer which I grazed and was later killed by a buddy of mine with his muzzleloader. Was a decent 8 point[:@].Never lost a deer that I actually hit.Where I hunt the .270 is perfect, rarely any shots over 100 yds. and a big deer in my area would be 150lbs.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
Almost any caliber of rifle will work. Whenmy brothers and I were little weused a 223 and had no problems and we rarely shotunder 100 yards. Its a matter of where you hit the deer. In South Texas, we tend aim at the neck...unless we know we're going to shoulder mount it. 99% of the time you hit the neck, break the spine, andthe deer drops. Lets face it...if you aim at the neck and the deer doesn't drop then you missed...haha. That way if its a nice deer you know you won't hit it and not find it.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
Go back to his store and ask for a discount on a 270, since its so crappy you'll be doing him a favor. |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
I've killed so many deer with my 270 that I've lost count from 30 yards out to 200 yards. There's not much difference between it and a 30-06 so if the 270 sucks then so would the 30- 06 BUT IT DON'T. I'd say the guy is clueless.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
I just got a .270 from my girlfriend as an early Christmas gift and so far i absolutely love it. I think that guy is nuts.
|
RE: A .270 Sucks????
maybe confused with 30-30? .270 is an optimal sort of cailber that has been well proven and is almost identical to the 30-06. If you own one that not much point in owning the other.
7mm-08 is the perfect deer pill in my opionon. Have one and love it! |

RE: A .270 Sucks????
I have the same experiences as WVcritter with the 270. I have probably killed over 50 with mine. Its an absolute hammer on deer. From arms length to waaaaaay over there. The funny thing as much as I like the 270 for deer I like the 7-08 even better. They are both damn near perfect whitetail rounds.
I hate to bash anybody but that store clerk is an idiot! |
RE: A .270 Sucks????
Here in the area of Texas that I hunt the .270 has not been a fan favorite. I have seen a lot of deer lost with the .270 rather than any other caliber.
Does it suck? Well for me it does, and I will never buy another. The .270 was the first rifle that I bought myself when I turned 18. I had3 sour accounts with it and sold it. The first was 75 yardbroad side shot on a mule deer buck thatbounced off as if not shot. My daddumped him with one shot at 280 yards with a 6mm. We found my bullet stuck in the shouldernext to the shoulder bone. The second was on an Aoudad sheep. Made another perfect shoulder shot at 250 yards to see the big ram stand there as if not hit. The second shot was a little back and at least put the ram on the run. My buddy put the third and final shot in him with a 7mm-08 from over 300 yards which dropped him in step. The third and last mishap with that gun was yet another well placed shoulder shot on a whitetail doe from 150 yards. When I shot her she jumped srtaight up in the air like she was hit good. I didn't expect her to go far. We founda good blood trail and tracked her for about 200 yards until we lost the blood. My cousin shot a doe that evening about a 1/2 mile away from my blind with a bullet under the skin where I shot the doe earlier. So as far as the .270 goes, I would agree with the sales man. Maybe he should keep his trap shut and just sell the gun but I would've added fuel to the fire if I'd been there. After selling it I bought a 6mm that I am in love with. I have never had an animal that I've shot run far, except a big hog. P.S. Dont like the 30-06 either, I am now a .308 fan. |
