If a head shot is all I am offered Ill let the deer walk. I can and will get a better shot than that. If your so desperate to shoot a deer that you need to take a marginal shot, then maybe bird hunting would be a better choice.
again you dont hunt up here. we have about 4 deer per sq. mile you might only get one chance pal. better make it count
i get what your sayin skybuster but the shot being ethical or not has no relevance to how many deer you have per square mile. whereever your hunting now matter what the deer population i say if you dont have an ethical shot on the animal do not take it. ya gotta have some respect for the animal to at least make a clean ethical kill on them. just my two cents

I'm pretty much either way for it, if i already have enough meat but want to shoot a deer for another family member might was well just try it, i mean you wont wound it so you dont hafta worry about that, and if you miss then well you miss who cares!
Cant wound on a head shot?????? Have you ever seen a deer running around with a flopping upper or lower jaw? I have and it is not a pleasing sight. THis is the result of a head shot that is a few inches off, which in turn results in a long, slow painful death.

thats def. comiong from someoone who is pretty ignorant themselves there bowman. and canned heat, you said exclusivley. thats pretty vague. i think the guys, myself included who arent afriad of popin a deer in the melon are saying if thats the shot they have, they take it. i do. but if i have a decent shoulder shot ide rather have it. up here in maine buddy you boys would go home empty handed w/ high and mighty opinions like that. you must be some of those polo shirt hunters w/ heated blinds and feeders and food plots i bet! i voted for #4 by the way
By exclusively, if you know what that means: as in the only shots they'll take. How that's vague, I don't know. I know of yahoos who think it's really neat to see what kind of carnage they can cause to the noggin of a whitetail....like they're in it for the killing and the graphic outcomeof it all more than they are for the meat, the hunt, or the health of the herd. Trust me, I still shoot competitively on occasion and could most times take out whatever, whenever within a given known range. Why would I risk a lost and wounded animal to a marginal shot like that when it's almost always uncalled for? Telling us you can dial in an easier, safer, andbetter shot on 72 square inches of deer head versus some 600+ square inches of vital region is a joke. So by your comment of: "4 deer per square mile...better make it count", you'll sit all morning for your one deer a day deer and when he swings by, all you're thinking about is a brain shot...because you might not see another deer? And when you do pull the trigger, is the deer even still at that point? Now I know where all the wounded jawless deer are coming from.

And for the record, I deer camp in Northern WI in an outside open-air tent with 7 other people. We butcher our own deer, crap in the woods, and take turns doing the chores that are necessary to keep the place from going to hell. We take showers from cooled boiling water before it freezes, and have on occasion booted wolves, badgers, and bears from our site. No 4 wheelers, no tv's, no heat, no nothing.

Learn to spell too, before you start piping up on how ignorant other people are....dumba$$.

hmmmm. skybuster does not sit there waiting to pop a deer in the brain. neither do I. But I am with him. when the only shot your presented is a does head through an opening in the brush, if I am comfortable with the range I will take it. i voted # 4 as well. this will never sway any opinions either way. and it is legal, so we are just beating this toic to death. I don't think any of us try to shoot a deer in the head just go the heck of it. but if that is the shot that is given. I have no problem taking it.

Neither do I. My point was you're saving little, if any, meat with a head shot versus dbl lung shot. That was the question in the thread starter, along with whether it was ethical or not.If that's the only presentable shot and it's in doable range....I don't think anyone here hasgot a problem with it.I have seen guys in the woods or at the registration station that thought they were the Lee Harvey Oswalds of the deer hunting world, and it's crap because at one point or another...if you concentrate on nothing but headshots, you'll haveyour shareof wounded deer...and the deer deserves more than that in my opinion. Taking pop shots at me and some other guy he's never meant is a little over the top too, I think....and if you read all of his posts in this thread, he's not saying what you're saying. He's on here looking for a pissing match, plain and simple. I voted for #2....should've been #4.

Let's settle this once and for all and end this dispute.
LOL, settle it once and for all. You could only wish. Head shots are unnecessary, and unethical, IMO.

If your dog was hit by a car and was suffering and you had to put it down, would you shoot it behind the shoulder or in the head ?
