Field dressing a deer sucks
I love everything about hunting, but I don't like blood, guts, the smell, cutting flesh, etc that come with field dressing. I have a weak stomach, but after a couple of times doing it I have not yet puked or passed out, even though I'm sure it will eventually happen. It is not a pleasant experience for me.
Am I the only one out there that despises it enough to try to find other alternatives and those that also hate it, what do you to make it easier? Have someone else do it for you, let the deer processing guy do it, suck it up, ???? |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I actually dont mind it at all, I even do my dads for him, he's on blood thinners and if he even nicks himself a little he bleeds likea stuck hog, so I dont have a choice, lol.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I used to stand over top of it with my knife and act like I didn't know what was going on til someone else said "give me that." Don't work anymore though. It's part of it. I don't think I know any processors that will gut it for ya. Just stick cotton up your nose, have a big jug of water and get it done as fast as you can.

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
hahahaha, i puke, cut some more, puke, cut, it's a routine, lol.......then i go get a sandwich after it is all done, for some reason it makes me hungry...lol
you can actually skin and quarter the deer without gutting it...the tenderloins are a lil tricky to get, but you can even get them......nothing has to go waste... |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
Never bothered me. I see it as a part of a hunt and it is a part of showing the respect to the harvested game. As of an alternative- I know a guy in Europe who does photo hunting. He has a nice Nikon, even with a small skeleton stock and he takes a picture of his “mark”

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I don't mind it at all. Field dressing, skinning, and butchering are all a part of hunting deer to me.

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I haven't puked yet, as you can see by my name I'm used to gore. Although the first time I pierced a deers lung was an unpleasant experience. ppsssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh right in the face, lol.
I'm of the mind that if you can't clean it, you shouldn't kill it. but that's just me. The processor should do it for you for an extra fee. |

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
It's kinda reminds me of when my kids where babies and had dirty diapers. Just something that has to be done. Also if you have a dog and well that is something else that just has to get done. Ya suck it up and let her rip...
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I generally dont FIELD dress....just drag em out and do it in a controled environment...at the processor, known him for a while, where theres electric wenches and hot water. Ive done it both ways and never tasted a difference in meat. Blood and busted guts dont bother me...any of my kids puke or I have to blow their nose, Im done for. lol
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
theres away to clean them with out gutting them. thats if you dont eat the ribs or care about the heart or the inner loins. hang the deer upside down all of the guts will drop down , skin it and after that cut thre front shoulders and back straps off then just de bone the hind quarters while its still hanging . thats a way to do it if you dont gut them in the woods or if the deer has been gut shot .
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
lol Sorry but you guys are making me laugh. I use to not like it but after I don't know how many deer but alot I got use to it. Now i am like a machine. Never came close to puking though. lol

check you state laws before quartering any deer. Some states only allow a deer to be field dress before it is taken to a check in station.

Not many farm boys on here are there???
We used to butcher 20 pigs a year, did it in 2 days time...Made sausage, smoked our own hams, etc... We also butchered 2 cows a year, in addition to squirrels, rabbits, quail, ducks, deer and other critters that we ate...Any of you guys ever cleaned a turtle??? Makes a good soup... Some evenings we clean 6-8 deer in and evening, nothing to it... |

at our place near Abilene you can have your deer dressed at the processor for 20 bucks, if it is a gut shot it is 30,

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
When each of my boys shot their first deer, each asked me "Are you going to gut it now?" My answer both time was- "You aren't carrying that knife for looks."
This may help you- Gut the deer as soon as possible and do it outside where there is a breeze. Most of the objectionable odor is from bacterial action in the bowels so do not pierce them. Know what you are doing so you can do it more quickly without taking time to figure it out. Bob |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
It's part of the deal....Deer hunting is fun until the gun goes off. Then the work starts. I don't mind field dressing as much as I do processing. After skinning and quartering, all the wrapping and grinding and stuffing....Whew, my back is already sore.. A lot of guys send theirs to a processor, but I trust my knives and my kitchen more than anyone elses... plus, I know Im getting MY meat and ALL of my tenderloin.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I don't mind the blood and guts, but i can't stand the sound of sawing through hide and bone.[:@]
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I'd rather gut them than drag them for a mile or two at full weight, but if I can get the 4-wheeler to them I dont gut them, just hang them by the back feet and start cutting, most of the meat is the hams, backstraps, neck and shoulder.hey the coyotes and buzzards got to eat something.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
Gutting to me is part of the whole experience. It doesnt bother me at all i actually kind of enjoy it. It's kinda nice to have somewhere warm to stick you're hands on a cold day.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I like it, it means I was successful. The smells and everything remind me of past success. I can see how others wouldn't like it though. With each deer, I get a little faster, and a little cleaner. By the end of the season, the gutting is all over with in 3 minutes or so and I'm only bloody up to my wrist.
This wasn't the case when I got my first elk though, I learned quick you can't get through the rib cage with just a knife like you can with a deer. I was up to my shoulders in guts trying to get that one done. If you don't like gutting, there's ways to make it less nasty. Wear gloves (good idea anyway especially with hogs and other less clean beasts). Make sure your knife is hair shaving sharp to make it go through everything faster with less resistance. Don't go so fast that you cut the guts, lungs, bladder, or yourself. And carry water and a rag to clean yourself off afterwards. If the smell bothers you a lot, just carry some cologne with you to mask the smell when you get back to your truck, plus, you'll smell great when you get to the processor[8D]. |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
We always let ours hang for at least a day in the cold weather before we begin to process them. I believe you want a good chill on them before you start hacking away.... |

yea it dont bother me either, but if it bothers you that bad you can always take it to a processer. Some that we have here do the whple nine yards for you.

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
my uncle vomits when he sees blood. so whenever he shoots a deer he either calls me or my dad to come field dress it for him. but its usually me[:@]
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
'I love the smell of field dressing in the morning'. I honestly don't comprehend the issue.
Our nation is becoming 'wussified' and now our deer hunters, too! Unbelievable! God help us all! |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I use the old trick to avoid the smell I learned while still "on the job". I keep a small bottle of Vicks Vapo-rub in my pack. One small dab under your nose will kill any odor. Cops have known this for years. As for the blood etc., just deal with it the best you can. It's all part of the hunt.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
i ave mine processed but i gut em myself it really doesnt make me puke but idont exactly enjoy it but i also dont think it that bad
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
The blood and guts don't bother me. What's strange is that the sound kindasurprises mesometimes, those squishy sucking noises while you're gutting it out.
