RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I don't mind at all. I'm kind of like whitetail fanatic, I usually end up doing most of my buddys' deer. I've got it down to a 15-20 minute process once they're hung. I don't gut, and I use nothing but a knife. I guess you don't paint your face in blood and dance around the campfire either?

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
Im with NcHawk here.... I am usually done with it before they quit whining and gagging..lol. Wasnt raised on a farm but I was a quick learner.

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
also one tool i really think is extremely helpful is the 'but out" its very helpful when it come sto removing the but hole

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I don't mind guttin' 'em at all. I make it a game, trying to do it faster and cleaner than the last one, knock on wood, I haven't sliced myself yet. True test is if youmanage to not get blood on your sleeves - and no rollin' 'em up either.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
One other point...You can clean a deer without gutting, including removing the tenderloins...

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
Man, I never even thought about whether I like to field dress a deer or not, I just do it and not think about it, it part of the experience. If Im gutting a deer that means I shot it so Im usually in a pretty good mood! I also like doinga check to see my shot placement on the internal organs. I always want to see it I took out the lungs, heart, etc. No better feeling while hunting than opening up a deer and seeing a nice clean heart shot, then I can tell I made a ethical shot.Plus, when its all said and done, I'll check the stomachto see what its been eating. I hunt on my dads friends property in Michigan and since he lets me hunt on his property and he upkeeps it, I always gut his deer for him, no questions asked. Plus I'll do my fathers as well, these men taught me a lot about deer hunting its the least I can do to repay them.
I will say one of my favorite things about introducing a new deer hunter to the sport is having them gut there first deer. Never to they think it will be that warm inside. I told my buddy, I'll give you all the advice I can and do my best for you to get a deer, but you have to gut it. When he got his first deer, the task of gutting it was priceless! He tried to gut it with 2 fingers for about 20 minutes, finally, when the diapram cutting came, he "manned up". I will never forget that experience and the laughs I had as I coached him how to do it. |

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I also have a weak stomach.
I wear a nose plug to do the litter box, and sometime still have trouble. (2 cats came with the wedding ring) :) I haven't had the pleasure of changing a diaper yet. Field dressing doesn't seem to bother me though. The exception would be if there's a gut shot or accidently cut into the guts while cleaning. Or if I smell the milk from a doe, there may be some gagging involved. lol I helped my friend with his first deer (first time field dressing for either of us) took us about 45 minutes since we didn't know what we were doing. He ended up puking. and I had to laugh at him. (Hedoesn't have a big problem with diapers, just when it's really bad) However, earlier in the process, I had put pressure on the bladder and got peed on. He laughed then. |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
There are a million things that rank higher on the "icky" scale than gutting a deer.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I am with most everybody else, if you shoot it, you gut it.There are a few tricks, some you learn by doing and some you can learn by watching other hunters. If done right, most of the time I am only bloody to my wrist. The more you do the easier it becomes. Jump on in, the waters fine!
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
Never even thought about it. A little skinny deer isn't shxt..........try a moose, elk or buffalo. Now theres some guts. I did four bull elk in one day and have done several antelope and deer at one time. I just split 'em, peel out the organs from the neck down, make two cuts in the diaphram and one around the butthole. It all comes out in one pile. Don't cut anything open inside. Even a large elk can be done and ready to be washed up in ten minutes.

ORIGINAL: formula1 'I love the smell of field dressing in the morning'. I honestly don't comprehend the issue. Our nation is becoming 'wussified' and now our deer hunters, too! Unbelievable! God help us all! ![]() |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
The only thing that bothers me is the smell of feces. Hogs keep crapping as your gutting and skinning them, and it smells like human crap, that will make me gag instantly, but I just keep going. Gut shot deer can smell pretty bad too.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
All I can say is its part of the hunt and its something everyone needs to know how to do on their own if they're gonna hunt in the 1st place. I actually enjoy it. I'm sure you can find videos on different ways to do it, but you kind of gotta suck it up. Good luck to you and your future field dressing fun!
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
lol wow, I cannot believe this bothers so many to the point of gagging. I mean guts isn't a smell your going to pick up chicks with well ... at least not here in Minnesota but it certainly isn't bad enough to gag. I am laughing out loud as I am reading some of these.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
for the most part it doesnt bother me the slightest bit, although there have been a few gut shots thathave gottenme to the point of coughing where I had to come up for a breather, but it is part of hunting so suck it up
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
like I said its not the gut that bothers me, its the **** that comes out,
I cant stand the smell of ****. When my kids were young I use to gag everytime I changed their diapers. That smell is bad.[:'(] |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I don't have a problem with it...in fact...I enjoy the process just to see how, what, &why it died after it was hit.
I did however, have a problem once with gut shot buck of my brothers while I was hungover as he11. Uecker.... |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I don't even thick nothing about it, its part of the hunt. I've made some good shots and some that could of been better, [:o] but its like second nature now, I can probably do one at night with no light,....... come to think of it,..... I have, just go by feel and be careful not to rupture the bladder or anything esle. Use those disposable latex gloves. Like someone else said, the heat steaming can be quite warm when temps are down right cold. I think you'll get over it in time, as it makes it so much easier when your dragging it back to the truck. Just deal with it. [:'(] Bobby |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I am okay unlessI accidentlyknick the stomach. It is then I step backandfocus on keepingeverythingdown.
On the whole, it is just part of the job. |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
don't mind it at all, but then again i lovbed anatomy class in high school.........just part of the kill........i've goutted my share of gut shot deer in the past though, and they'll make even the strongest stomachs roll......
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
i hate when i do it, cus for some reason my farts smell like deer guts the whole week after[:'(]

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I can't smell!....................... I have no sense of smell and yet field dressin still isn't the mostpleasant thing to do for me. It definetly doesn't turn me off deer hunting, thats for sure. I don't think anybody actually enjoys it, some just dislike it more than others. It has no ill effects on me but it sure would be nice if the deer would process its self! JK:D
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
In the current issue of field and stream they actually say one of the most common situations in which hunters will experience heart attacks is while field dressing a deer.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I gut a lot of deer for people because they get this glazed look in thier eyes as they are doing it and I want o get back to hunting. I've seen the pukers and they are always fun to watch gut deer..............The pee bag cutters, the stabbers (gut holes), the hair cutters (all in the meat) and the people that don't gut, just wait until they get them to the processors. In PA you have to have the deer ear tagged when you take it for processing, inaddition you must fill out and send a harvest post card to the PAPGC. This is a law everyone follows ot the letter, that way the PAPGC can skew the deer kill averages. You must tag them prior to moving them.
In Ohio we have to check in the tagged deer, they then do their thing and put a metal tag on the deer for transport. Same tag before moving. |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
It's not that bad to gut a deer. Thing I hate the most is the drag. Sometimes the drag isn't hard, and I don't mind it, but when it's a drag, that sucks.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
The Deer Destroyer, get a quad w/ winch. No dragging

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
I don't mind it as much as I'm just clueless... I grew up cleaning birds, but only started chasing deer at ~25, this year will be my 4th hunt (at 30) and hopefully my 3rd, 4th, and 5th deer...
I just don't have any idea what I'm doing. My dad can cludge his way through it, but he hadn't dressed a deer for over 25 years when I shot my first one... so he's not really a great teaching resource!!! someone have a checklist to follow or something like that I can keep in my pocket!?!?!?! |
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
Cant say its bothered me really. The worst experience was actually gutting a buck that had been shot through the hind quarters opening weekend. That wasnt so pleasant but considering all the deer I have had to field dress over the years and that being the worst, i'll take it! I know it could be worse.
|
RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
my second buck I shot head-on with a LOT of gun (35 Whelen)... made a pretty good mess at the far end, I will admit...

10 minutes done and on the 4 wheeler going back to camp. If you can't clean it you don't shoot it.

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
wait until you can get to your gambrel. then once you've got it up by the hind legs, start skinning. once you've gotten down to the genitals, make your incision down to the sternum. keep pulling the skin down. remove the urine sack, try hard not to puncture it. cut the innards loose. let them fall into the chest cavity. remove your tenderloins. keep pulling the skin down to the shoulders. remove the backstraps. make your incisions around the elbows and back up to the sternum. pull the rest of the skin off. saw off the front legs at the incisions, and remove the shoulders. if you're going to keep the head, saw through the backbone where the skin ends. drop the innard filled cavity in a 5 gallon bucket. saw off backbone at the hips. split the hams. then saw off the back legs below the knees. it's not that hard, you haven't wasted any meat and you've made a lot less mess. ice your meat, and go dump your waste.

RE: Field dressing a deer sucks
Respect the animal you have just harvested. If you are going to hunt, you need to except it.I don't know if you have kids, but think of it like changing a diaper full of ----.
