You should be able to go to your local county forestry office and get a simple handbook of local trees or you can order a more thorough dendrology book. Be sure it covers your local area. The county forester should be able to help you there also.

Depending upon how extensive you want .... if just a handbook for identifying "native" trees common to your area, like "Timbercruiser" said try the state's forestry department. It'll probably be a free-bee. If you want a comprehensive resource, look at one of the book sellers such as Barnes and nobles or Books A Million for reference books.
