what to eat while hunting

Iam new to hunting and this will be my first year going alone.
I have seen a few places thatsay to bringanything from snacks all the way to bringing a day or so worth of food with you.I guess my question is what does everyone bring with them in their pack to eat and how much is a good amount.
Iwill be hunting in Oklahoma on public landsoIshould be with in a reasonable distance from camp.

Bring what you think you'll eat. I don't hunt too far from the truck but I usually have my day pack with at least 2 20oz bottle of water or gatorade, 2 or 3 energy bars, a pack of beef jerky. If it's not been a good week and haven't seen many deer I pack an mre to stay out all day.

i like to bring a bottle af apple juice or water and a couple of bags of peanuts. they seem to work the best to take the hunger edge off. cans off pop are hard to work wth so i bring bottles i can close. thats just for a few hours i can't sit all day so i don't need much

Water, a couple different types of granola bars.

Yep, me too. I eat a bowl of hot oatmeal in the morning and the water and granola bars can take me all the way to supper. I might throw in a couple of apples too.

I bring a PBJ sammie (peanut butter and jelly) and a bottle of water. I like to have a granola bar for a treat too.

Bring lots of water. I'm with the other guys and like to bring PJ sandwiches. I also gring a baggy of unwrapped hard candy. No wrappers and they help your mouth from getting dried out.

Bottle of dr. pepper, rice crispy bars, a few milky ways for desert, and deer sticks.

I dont try to bring to much because than it will make to much noise opening and closing things and putting in the bag. Im also limited on the bag space beause it also carries my hunting supplies.

RE: what to eat while hunting

Keep in mind if you can smell the food, so can the Deer or whatever your hunting for...

I have the smallest Camel Backpack and it holds 70 oz. of water, along with my essentials if I score.
Like my knife, GPS, calls, rope, two freezer bags (1 for the heart and 1 for the liver), surgical gloves, a few paper towels, bino's, safety pack,
compass, small folding saw and small scentless spray bottle.

And now to your direct question the food... Plain turkey / ham or pb&j (nothing to stinky) and granola bars, already unwrapped in a baggie.

When / if I'm hunting a stand I can climb the tree with the pack on and hang it on a limb, it's that easy.
If I have my climber on my back then my bow is in one hand and my pack in the other.

whatever you bring think about the noise too. As Edcycloperia mentioned, anything in a noisy wrapper should be unwrapped and put in a plastic ziplock ready to eat

In cold weather I will bring a thermos with some hot soup, tomato, or chicken noodle. It can make all the difference in being able to stay put all day when the snow flies. Water, some sort of beverage with caffeine in it, snikers bar, sandwhich, a couple granola bars, and sunflower seeds to fight boredom.

Very good points about noisy wrapper and smelly foods.

I don't worry about either...3 or 4 Tootsie Pops, some waterand I'm set for day.

RE: what to eat while hunting

While I'm a big proponent of carrying a map of your hunting grounds with you, its important to study it before you trip. The main nutritional reason is to know your proximity to water sources. Are there several streams nearby? Will you be near a lake? Is there only one water source? If you get lost, injured, or otherwise need extra time you need to know how close you are to water. On that note, while hunting solo I always carry iodine tablets with me. They're the lightest, smallest way to make water drinkable. All you need is a nalgene bottle or bladder reservior.

As far as food, I stick to trial mix. You're walking on trails so that's the law. Just kidding. Trail mix is easy to carry, non greasy, doesn't smell, and wont make your breath smell. its also loaded with fat and calories so you'll get more energy from it than from a comprable weight in apple slices. I concur with the beef jerkey fans, but don't carry it myself. Good luck and God bless.

I usually carry either 2 waters or 1 water and a Gatorade, thenan apple or 2 depending on the size, a granola bar or 2, and maybe a ziplok bag of trail mix. Sometimes a sandwich.
Soft chew candies like Drops can give a quick boost, though not the best nutrition. Caramel candies, nuts, raisins, dried figs, prunes, ... lots of options.

Everything is open to negotiation depending on what's in the camp larder. If all I have is bologna and bread then that will do. Anything tastes excellent if you are hungry enough. It's amazing how just an apple and even cold coffeecan boost your energy late in the afternoon.

I often hunt close enough to the truck that a 1/2 hour hike will put me there, and in real cold situations I'll make the trip back for a hot lunch of soup, sandwich (dunked in the soup and slurped up) and hot coffee and cookies. That helps me sit real still for the afternoon sit when the temps are hovering around 10-20F and with a stiff wind to go along with it..

these are all really good suggestions i was thinking of doing the granola bars and some pb and j sandwiches maybe some other snack food just to cut the hunger. do many of you carry a camel pack or do you bring bottles? I have a hunting pack that has a place for a camle pack inside of it and was wondering if anyone had a preferance

I usually never take anytihng to my stand except a bottle of Mt.Dew! Everyone worried about scent control, well most foods have scent. Just another thing to worry about. If I do take anything its left in the truck.

Since I do a lot of still hunting, and can cover quite a bit of ground a dayI usually take a couple of sandwiches, a freeze dried meal, chips, and a camelbak full of water. Either that or a couple of freeze dried meals.
I can't tell you how many deer I have seen while lighting up the Pocket Rocket, and "cooking" a freeze dried meal.

I carry lots of water, some home made trail mix, a few slices of home made jerky and sometimes commercial Granola bars. If it is big time cold, I might pack a small thermos of hot cocoa.

I bring foods that don't have too much odor.Light weight stuff like nuts {fat and energy} Jerky in a zip lock,(protein)and hydrate before I go out and bring at least 1 qt. of water no matter how long I think I'll be out in the woods. Some times I have some snacks in my bag from last year when I'm getting ready for the season.Better to throw them away now than to not have them before.Put those peanut bitter crackers in a zip lock too, less noise.

Water and granola bars are the norm for me. If I know it's a long hike back to my stand then I will bring more. I've never worried too much about scent. I killed a buck a few years ago w/a can of sardines sitting on my lap. Crunchin' on crackers too.

I do love those root beer barrels that you buy in the bulk candy section of a store. Hard candys can help wake a person up and moisten the pallet. I also like the cream savers hard candy's, or good old worthers originals.

I always take beanie weenies, peanut butter crackers, maybe some nutty buddys, a couple of waters, and leftover coke from Jack's that morning. Allof which stays in a cooler at the truck for after the hunt. Sometimes I'll take a pack of crackers to the stand. Don't worry about slight noises a wrapper makes, just be smart and don't open the wrapper up when a deer is in sight. A candy wrapper won't run a deer completely outta the woods, sounds like leaves crunchin anyways. I always eat a big breakfast at Jack's before a hunt, so I usually don't get hungry til after 12, and most of the time I'm back at the truck before then.

RE: what to eat while hunting

For an all dayer I take a sandich of some kind (nuthin messy), maybe an apple, some jerky if I've made some, maybe some sausage biscuits, and definitely some real basic trail mix (I just mix some nuts, cashews or peanuts, with peanut M+Ms).

I dunno what you're hunting, but what you should consider is packaging---how much noise are you gonna make getting all this grub open---and placement---how much movement is it gonna take to get it in your gullet. I made a few real basic chow bags, they're basically cotton cloth something along the lines of linen, with a long (mabye 7-8") flap. Anything that has a noisy wrapper, I take out of that wrapper and put it in this bag. The long flap allows me to roll it up kinda like a burrito for carrying in a pocket or pack. It's real quiet in the woods.

Good luck and don't go hungry! Oh, by the way, you may think you're only goin' for a few hours, but what if you break a leg or some dumbass shoots you? You might want some extra chow while you're hanging out there.

i was kind of wondering that when i posted to see if everyone brought anything extra or if the just packed only whatthey needed for the amount of time they planned to be out in the woods. i know i plan to to bring some extra just to be on the safe side.

unless i'm seeing deer, i always get down mid day and walk back to my truck where i keep an ice chest with sandwiches. i never take food with me. i have sat all day before because the deer were moving all day but that is rare.
