Always, alwaysinsist thatyour Dad take the first shot.
At times, he will tell you otherwise.

That's when you must listen to your elders.

Good Luck to you and your Dad.

RE: Who Shoots First?

Let me first say that I didn't think this would be a subject that got this much attention. I suppose a lot of hunters have a strong connection to their fathers when it comes to deer hunting. I asked this question with my answer already in mind. I would let my father shoot first if he had the right shooting angle. So far I have taken the largest buck off of our farm so I would love for him to have the chance at something larger than what he has taken. As far as why we would want to sit together has little to do with taking a big buck. As I am now finishing my college career we are once again having time to get back to the way things were before life got so busy. Hunting isn't just about tagging a big buck. For us it is more about spending some time together doing what we love to do the most.

You are absolutely correct that hunting isn't just about tagging a big buck. You can take it one step further and say that life has way MORE important issues than hunting also. A relationship between fathers, sons, siblings can and should be enriched at all times, not just while hunting or watching football together. That is why I feel that if your intention truly is to hunt and hopefully be successful, then you should probably hunt from different stands. Case in point this past season. Me and my uncle were hunting two different stands only a few hundred yards from each other. We both shot very decent bucks for our area within minutes of each other. Now if we had been hunting together from one stand, I am absolutely certain that two bucks would not have been downed that morning. We may have gotten one, but after the congratulating and talking and running up to the dead buck, the second surely would never have shown himself. So in our case we had TWO happy hunters, not just one. Plenty of time to bond and recap the exciting day once we got the bucks out of the woods and were sitting at the dinner table and hopefully for years to come!

I am not saying that we won't hunt apart in our own stands. We have a long season to hunt and many stands to hunt out of. We have built this tower blind to over look our food plots that we have spent the last two years planting. We just want to enjoy some time together in the deer woods. Believe me both of us will do what we can to both tag a big buck.

I usually don't hunt with anyone else in the stand. I always live by the mentality that the one blind that I am not sitting at is going to havea buck of a lifetime at it, plus I like to enjoy mother nature at her finest and it's easierto do that alone. I usually only hunt with someone if I am teaching them to hunt, Was up to late "hanging out" with hunting partners and need a nap during the morning hunt or after an all nite drive into camp. Plus I find that I spend a lot of time with my father on the drive hunt (5+ hours) at lunch and after the evening hunt.

Jimmy, I hope you don't mind, but I have to respectfully disagree. I learned in my teenage hunting years that my dad enjoyed it a lot more for me to harvest a deer. I used to hold out for a wall hanger and finally he told me that he had shot over 40 deer in his life, the greatest thing he could experience now was to see how happy I would be harvesting any deer, not just a wallhanger. The next day on our trip I harvested a decent 3x3 mule deer. I was so excited and my dad didn't want to stop taking pictures. He was too proud.

I learned the same thing a few years back, was deer hunting with two buddies that had never got a deer before. The only thing I wanted was for them to harvest a deer. After hearing my buddy shoot and making my way to his stand and seeing the smile that he had got his first deer. Awesome.

I think it all depends has your dad taken a trophy deer? Have you? My dad has taken some beautiful whitetails, mule Deer, a bull moose and a nice Elk. He has yet to experience me to take a decent whitetail buck and I know that is what he really wants more than anything. Id figure it out before hand, but prepare for something like, "My scope is fogged up, you take it, i'll back you up." Good luck to you and your dad, I hope to see a picture of both of you with matching 10 pointers this fall!

Of course your Dad was excited for you during your teenage years. Just as you have been excited when young/inexperienced hunters finally get their first deer.

We (my 3 sons and hunting buddies) would much rather help someone get a deer. It is much more rewarding and besides, that's what hunting is all about.

That's exactly why I said what I did. I'm sure he would still rather see you shoot a trophy. Out of respect, I recommended you giveyour Dadthe opportunity -to let you shoot first.

And yes, Good Luck to you and your Dad. I continue to hunt with my son (all in their mid-late 30's).
Unfortunately my Dad will be with me in spirit only....He ALWAYS is.

If you're interested in reading this. He's what I said about my Dad and how much he meant to me as a hunter. It was posted here a few years back - but, in this case, time means nothing.

Depends on which side of the blind the buck comes out on.. My side I shoot.. His side he shoots.. Luck of the draw.

Doesnt matter to me who im with i always let my hunting buddy, dad, kidshave first try. Im happy when others get one. I enjoy being outdoors so thats my trophy. Everyone ive taken with me has always offered me deer meat so thats nothing to worry about either. I have tracked, drug out, field dressed and butchered many adeer for other people. That is my reward.

If you two are hunting a food plot try this. Who ever is sitting on the left takes whats on the left and whos sitting on the right takes whats on the right.

When it comes to my father or my son....both will get to take the shot first if they chose to.
