Snake Protection, Need advice?
I hunt in Florida where Rattlesnakes, briars and water moccosons are common. I want to get a pair of briar pants and have heard some offer snake protection. Of course, for deer hunting, they are too noisy but will work for scouting during the off season.
I usually wear rubber boots, 17 inch Wolverines, but heard snakes will bight right through them. So...I am looking at alternatives. I don't want to spend a fortune nor do I want the tall lace up snake boots, but I need something. I tend to stomp through the thick stuff and don't want to keep worrying about getting bit.
Any ideas?
thanks

My current pair is the Rocky 16" cordura snake boots. Can't beat them for piece of mind when tromping the lowcountry swamps. These boots are the lace up style and I like them fine. My first pair was the pull on style with the leather bottoms and cordura uppers. They pulled on and off easy enough but I still like the lace up style better.
When the weather gets cold enough I start using my 8" rocky stalkers. (around December)

we kill a few each year and no one in our area has been bitten.
if it bothers you get the boots,if not don't spend the $$$.
good luck and be careful.

I buy timber in N.W. Fl. and honestly rarely see a rattlesnake in the woods. If you make a little racket in your walking around the rattesnakes will try to avoid contact with you, unlike the moccasin. Your best bet would be to buy a pair of snake proof chaps, they are cheaper than boots, protect you from briars and will last a long time.

I have a pair of Chippewa snake boots that I have had for about 6 years. I think I paid 169.95 back then. I would try the Rocky brand because they are only 100.00 and they are waterproof.

Yes, waterproof is important too. My land is very wet at times. Someone said they rarely see a rattlesnake so don't worry. I have only seen three this year, none even close to presenting a risk to me, but it only takes one. I am in the woods alot and stomp through the nasty stuff, so no sense in worrying about it.
I like the snakeproof briar chaps idea. Will look into that. Really don't want to be lacing up tall boots.

I bought snake proof chaps several years back. I have only used them a couple of times. They are suppose to be guaranteed snake proof. It does give you a more secure feeling knowing you have them on.Keep your eyes open and watch where you step, that's your best defense..Ruger Rdhawk
