Only one caliber for the rest of your life.

Wanted to make this a poll, but couldn' t get it to work for some reason.

If you were told you had to choose a single caliber, and it would be the ONLY one you' d ever get to hunt with (Safaris and shotguns excluded) for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

After thinkin this up, I really thought about it, my first instinct was .30-06 springfield, but then I reconsidered....my vote goes .44magnum, cuz I really love the round, although not as much as the 06, and it would give me several types of arm to use it in, lever gun, wheelgun, carbines, bolt, single shot hand and long, and I feel it' s more than capable of taking any game on the north american continent if hunted correctly.

:DMy Savage .308 is going to be it. It' s great fun to shoot and very accurate and just flattens whitetails.

30-06, but the funny thing is I don' t own one!!!

But I do have a 222, 243, 270, 7mm, and 338 win mag. Glad I don' t really have to make that choice!

I like smaller fast rounds ,but if it could only be one round I would say the 30-06 . Just in case I had the opportunity to hunt some larger animals .

well we are in the deer hunting forum so i will post like you mane one round for deer hunting for the rest of my life id go with the 30-06...ive seen deer hit with many rounds...none act like the 30-06...to me with the right explosive bullet its the best....close or far the 06 can handle it if handled properly...

My choice would be the 30.06! It can handle anything on the continent.

50 caliber muzzleloader

I' ll take my 12 guage sabot slug! You cant exclude shotguns. ;)

If it had to be a rifle then the 30-06 would be my choice , but most .30 caliber rounds would be sufficient.

If it was just deer hunting the 7mm-08 would win hands down but considering moose and bear I guess I would pick my 300WSM as best of all worlds. Now if I can just get my hands to let go of this 7mm [:@]

I don' t have one but I think the 06 is the most versitile round every made, from the 150grain boattail to the big ol' 220 grain monster.

Only one gun for everything,[:@][:' (] I would have to go with the .338 WIN. I could load it down for smaller game and still be able to hunt everything except for the cape buffalo. I think it would be able to cover a much broader range of animals better than the 30-06 and I would " feel" better having a bigger slug if I were to hunt grizzlies.

RE: Only one caliber for the rest of your life.

Since a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, my choice would be to start with the the caliber to hunt the biggest, most dangerous game and work down from there...my vote goes to the 300 Win Mag.

Ruddyduck 02-17-2003 04:08 AM

RE: Only one caliber for the rest of your life.

The 375 H&H hands down. For smaller game such as deer it can be loaded down with lighter bullets and can be used with confidence in dangerous situations on the great bears in North America.
If limited to only one rifle ,this would be my choice ,plus you ready for that African safari also.

tough choice, though i think i go with the 45colt. lots of versitily. though if i was true caliber then id choose 357 for an asorted range of calibers

it would have to be my .270 Win, possibly .300 Wby

.30-06 for sure....you could load it with some big bullets up to 220 grains I believe

HuntingBry 02-19-2003 11:22 AM

RE: Only one caliber for the rest of your life.

If I were stuck in North America I would stay faithful to my 30-06. Since I want to hunt in Africa some day if I could only pick one, I' d also go with the .375 H&H.

One gun only for the rest of my life! Thats a tough one. I am going to have to go with my .450 Marlin all my shooting is in close and I have grizzlies in my neck of the woods so its a nice comforting feeling to have it on my shoulder! Its a bit much for a whitetail but just right for a nice big bear or moose!

Excellent question!
