Well since I only deer hunt with rifle and all my shots are 100 yards or less I will step out on an old mans limb and say a 30-30, second choice would be an 06.

I seem to be a loner on this poll. But the best all around caliber for me would be the .35 Whelen. It' s an oversized 30-06, but on steroids. can go to 250gr. or down to 158 cast. If you don' t like recoil, downsize loads to the 35 Remington. Paco Kelly even downed an elephant with this caliber, so it would work on safari. Remington did a lot of hunters a favor.

That is a scary thought, I' ve had nightmares that were not that bad. One caliber, that makes me want to cry. 30-06 or .308

I' ve used the 30.06 for the last 26 years, so why change. It' s a good all around caliber. I' ve used it for anything from ground hogs to black bear.

7mm Rem mag if we' re talking deer only and the same if you throw in some elk. For an all around North American game killer I would say 300 win mag.

Since I shoot my 22-250 more that anything else I quess I would stick with it. I don,t love it for deer but it works and everything else the 22-250 is all I need. I would sure miss my 6.5x55 though.

HEHEHE my 445 supermag Dan Wesson with its burris 2x7 scope of course.:D:D:D:D:D.

I can do it all with it and never worry. Alaska africa no problem just stoke some heavy hard cast 330' s and push them to 1500+ and have some fun.:D

7mm Rem Mag. I mostly hunt whitetails but have hunted elk on occasion. It does a great job on both. No need to change.

Correct me if I' m wrong, but aren' t most guns of similar size just as versatile as the 30-06 if you handload?

seabuck 03-09-2003 03:40 PM

RE: Only one caliber for the rest of your life.

30-06,you can load it up for big game to moose size or down for varmints.2nd choice: .243, fast and flat,an excellent game getter up to deer sizes.

Would choose nothing other than my Marlin Model 336 Lever Action, chambered in .35 Remington.

Best Brush gun around and solid knock down power, especially with the 200gr. loads!! :D
