Hey everybody, I'm writing a piece on deer hunting and I was wondering if I could ask your opinion on something. If you had to tell a beginner 10 tips to improve his hunting what would they be?
Thanks for your time!!

OK, I'll bite but I am far from being expert. These are just some of the important lessons I have learned the hard way.
1) Always be prepared for an opportunity that may present itself. The biggest deer I ever saw walked out in front of me while I was setting up a stand and I didn't have my gun with me[:@]
2) Hunt the wind. You might as well stay home if you are bowhunting and the wind is in the deers favor.
3) Know your weapon and practice, a missed shot or worse a wounded animal is heart breaking
4) Scout and scout some more. You have to put yourself in a position to be lucky.
5) Practice patience. Understanding a particular property can take many seasons, understanding whitetails will probably take me alifetime.
6) If something isn't working do not hesitate to change.
7) Study deer behaviour while watching them. The deer you can see may provide you clues about animals you cannot
8) Dress comfortable, hunting is no fun when you are miserably cold or wet.
9)Have well thought out entrance and exit routes
10) Enjoy yourself appreciate the opportunity.

1-hunting is shooting. become a consistently good shooter before even thinking about the rest
2-learn ethical shot placement from all possible angles
3-if an animal you want to harvest doesn't offer a clear, ethical shot, don't just shoot anyway and justify it by saying "But that was the only shot I had"
4-be respectful to the game you hunt, you are asking them to give their life so you can extend yours.
5-play out different scenarios in your head and decide what you'd do given certain choices, it makes reacting to those ocurrences in the field that much quicker.
6-most game, deer especially, will follow their nose. they may here or see something they don't necessarily like, and pass it off as no big deal, but if they smell something they don't like, they're history.
7-use checklists and be a Boy Scout-come prepared.
8-always practice with the gear you will use in the field.
9-you're better off a little too warm than a little too cold.
10-hunting ethics apply to the animal you are hunting first, and are the best measure of a good hunter.

I won't make it to 10, but:
1) Attitude is everything. Hunt with the love.
2) Ethics are far more important than the kill. Wounding an animal cancels
out several clean kills.
3) The key to success is spending time in the woods, not buying whatever
miracle gadget they are currently hawking in the hunting rags.
4) The biggest bucks in your area live where hunting pressure is lightest.
That's four, but there's iron in them words, if I do say so myself.

Here are some new lessons I learned last year..
1. Don't expect you will hear oncoming deer. Many deer I saw last year were seen and not heard..Be looking for them.
2. Get as high as you can..most of us underestimate the deer's sense of smell..It's incredible.
3. In a public hunting area...get away from the other hunters..study maps lookng for funnels, creeks , thick swamps etc.
4. Have your weapon tuned and sighted in perfect.
5. Use the right call at the right time. EVery buck I saw..I called in.
My faveorite call "The Can"
6. In thick cover..take the scope off. You may not have time to put the cross hairs on.[:@]BIGGEST LESSON learned last year..
7. Eliminate noise..
I camo taped all moving parts on my Summit..leave food and drinks in the truck, don't move in your stand. If you crap by your truck ..bury it.
8. In the south, don't forgret your Therma Cell ..you don't need to be concerned with mosquitoes..
9. Remember , when your walking to your stand you are still hunting..walk in slow and quiet.pausing a few seconds every 5 steps when you get within 100 yds..climb the tree slowly.you are not in a hurry.
10. DOn't forget to wear your safety harness.
