My best luck with scrapes isnt so much as hunting a scrape/scrape line but hunting the main run nearby or the closest major funnel....

Make sure the scrapes are fresh, if not don't waste time on them. If they are being freshened, then hunt about 10-15 yds. on the downwind side of the trail connecting the scrapes. Always use the wind to your advantage!

RE: deer scrapes
I've done it a few different ways. Bucks generally will bed down wind of a particular scrape that he made. I will often try to hunt the trail that he may come in on or i'll try setting up in the direction I think he might wind from. Alot of times they won't even come and check the scrape, they can do that down wind with there nose. This tactic has worked for me but i'm sure there's other good ways to do it as well.
