Maybe they were used to human scent? People actually shy away at hunting land where there are many nature trails in fear of being interrupted by walkers/hikers, but I've found that it actually works in your favor to have them out there. The deer get used to the human presence after a while, because of the hikers, and they can't tell a hunter from a hiker.....until it's too late.

As you know you can't see a wind current. Sometimes they will blow the scent upward or between you and the game it might blow right or left.

Thermals, by gosh by golly, etc. The one thing I know for sure is deer will not smell me when the wind isn't blowing on their nose and I try to keepon my nose insteadeachtime I take to the field.
