I hunted (still hunted w/ a shotgun) the beginning of January one time here in Virginia where general firearms was still in, but no rifles.
There was 2-3" of snow and it was 18* outside. I very slowly and carefully walked, stalked, and played the wind. It was cold, but I was dressed for it. In the morning, I ended up bumping deer out of bedding in the pine trees andthickets - and couldn't get a shot off. [&o] When it's real cold in the late season, head to the pines and you'll see deer.

I hunt in Arkansas mainly. Our bow season goes to Feb 28. I key on food sources, but they have already demolished my food plots. In January I look to see if there are any leaves on the green briars. If there are two leaves left, they will find them. That is where I set up.
Some late season hunts, I see a lot of deer, some I don't see any.
