my wife and I both shoot 243.great gun for deer and hogs.I'm sure BIGGER game like elk; then I would go bigger.

never had a problem with taking any deer with my 243. also have never had a problem getting ammo.there are several makers with 3 or 4 different types.

I will add that I know a lot of people that used a 308, 270 or 30-06 then got a .243 for the wife or kid and ended up liking it better than what there were using.

Guilty as charged... I used to hunt with a .30-06, until I got my son a .243 for his 12th birthday. I liked it so much, I got one for myself, too. The .243 kills 'em just as dead, just as quickly as my '06 did, and the light recoil means I never lose sight of the deer at the shot. Bucks where I hunt rarely hit 200 lbs., so YMMV...

varment up to deer,no doubt the 243 but deer and up deff the 308.i'v always'd used my ruger 270 or my browning 7mm mag.i'v shot just about every rifle and these two are the best in my opinion.if your leaning towards the 243 you might want to check out the 22-250.my buddy has a browning 22-250 and it is very accurate.

The .308 is my all time favorite! But I have the itch for a .243, it will be my next gun purchase! Most Whitetail hunting is done within 300 yards, usually much less and the Whittail is not a tough animal to kill with decent shot placement! So, I'd saythe deer probably would not know the difference, even though there is quite a bit of difference between the .308 and the .243.
To me, the .243 is a "great" minimum for deer! Meaning that within normal hunting ranges, with good hunting bullets, it will get the job done with EASE!

In my personal opinion i would go with the 308. of course thats what marine scout snipers are issued and train with. flat trajectory. and if you might be stepping up later on down the road why not go ahead and get it now. if your worried about recoil (which i wouldn't be) slap a sims recoil pad on it.
