Hornady SST(results)
well, hunting season is over. I think it's time to see how the SST performed. For me, it wasn't near as good as the Interlock which I'm switching back to.
#1: I shot a 7pt, which dropped like he was hit by a bolt of lightning. It knocked him back down the hill about 3 feet at impact. The heart had a large hole right in the center.
#2: bad shot on my part, hit it too far back. The deer deer, but the exit hole was not as big as the Interlock holes.
#3: dropped right away, but again, it didn't make big enough holes.
#4: walked about 30yds, and dropped. yet again the holes were small.
please post your SST bullet results.

Deerslayer_37...I reloaded some 150gr SST's for my son-inlaw's .308 and they worked execelent! If a deer drops or only travles 30 yards, what more do you expect? If you want "BIG EXIT HOLES" try a big bore like a .375 H&H..just kidding. He did like the way the SST's preformed and he said he would use them again...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I used the SST this fall, 154gr out of my 7 rem Mag. Shot my buck at 125 yards quartering, dropped him in his track and it was devasting to say the least. The bullet tore the vitals completely apart, before exiting out the left shoulder and darn near plucking it from the bucks hide. I was pleased with the performance, the buck tipped the scales at 300 dressed and I shot in him in some knarl that would have been a b!tch getting him out had he not dropped within short order.
What caliber of rifle where you using Deerslayer???
The reason I asked is the 150 gr sst accounted for 5 animals in our party, 4 of which were taken with the 06. Other than 1 of those 4 deer the bullet didn't do much spectacular. It did the job with 3 animals down within 100 yards or so, but 2 of those were clean vital hits and the deer went pretty far all things considered. One doe the bullet exited, leaving a pinky in and about 1 - 1 1/2" out, the second was a decent sized buck it torn the back of both lungs and then didn't exit, we found it tucked into the opposite hide (appeared to be deflected of rib or something (weird, it was partially intact too). The other one was a good sized buck and he folded up within a step or two, completely trashed his vitals.
I was just wondering if it maybe the same caliber. Even though I have heard of many 06 shooter using this bullet and being pleased. I should mention the 06 bullets were all factory ammo.
Like mentioned I was very pleased with the performace I got and would definately use them again. I usually use Nosler Ballistic Tips.

well, i was using the 130 gr. loads in a .270 Win,factory ammo.i would use them again, but i just like the Interlock better. It holds up a bit more on shoulder shots.i was pleased with the SST,but I just think the Interlock would be better for my purposes. its great that you all had good reports with the bullets and all had good seasons.

RE: Hornady SST(results)
I just started using the 130g SST's this year in my .270 and only got a shot at one buck. He was quartering away real bad. Entry was in his right ham with a hole the size of a pencil. Exit was out the left side just behind his shoulder with a hole slightly larger than a golf ball. It looked like someone cut his feet right out from underneath him. I'm gonna use them again next year and see how it goes.

personally big holes mean more meat loss, so personally ill take small holes (relativly not .22 but not 2" either) and more meat, especially with shoulder shots
