RE: Why did this buck go so far after being shot?
Because He could! No, seriously though, it's been My experience that a buck will keep on going if the shot doesn't take out some major organs. By Your statement "through the brisket", it sounds like You hit him too far forward and might not have penetrated one or both lungs. In that case, that buck may have lived if the other hunter didn't drop him. I've seen that kind of shot many times, and the deer has a very good chance of putting a lot of ground between You and him. My condolences.

All shots are not stoppers unfortunately, it might kill the animal in time but just wasn't well placed enough to stop it in its tracks . If you hunt long enough this happens to most hunters .

Deer are tough creatures with a huge desire to live. The best bet may be, when hunting crowded areas, is to try and take out both shoulders with your shot. Was the doe legal game?

I had the same thing happen to me one year except I had also broken one of his front legs. The buck was blowing out parts of his lungs when he was running and leaving a good blood trail behind. It was the broken leg that slowed him down enough for me to get him. I had hit him with a 7mm mag at about 20 feet away. I had rushed my shot. I have to agree that it's the placement of the shot that's very important.

Sounds to me like you weren't sure of your target and beyond. <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle> The deer ran so far because you failed to hit vitals. Do they have hunters safety courses where you live? You might want to enroll.
