I'd take a .243 and put a Limbsaver recoil pad on it topped with a quality scope. Should be like shooting a .22.

243 or 6mm. Semi-auto would probably give you the best results for kick reduction. I have had major back surgery ending up with rods and screws in my back. I own everything from 223 to 300mag and IMO the best choice is the 243. I have a Browninglever actionin this and it is a pleasure to shoot. Most any caliber centerfire is certinaly leathal with a well placed shot but the 243 will do the job without a doubt. Hope this helps.

You might want to look at something like a savage model 12fv in 243win. The extra weight will help with recoil and if you put a sims recoil pad on it should be yerv easy to shoot.

243, 257 Roberts, 6.5x55 Swede, 6 mm Remington, 250 Savage. In my opinion fit is more important to perceived recoil than the cartridge. I know guys that hunt with a 222 and another with a 22-250. With your recent back surgery I doubt you'll be wanting to tote a heavy gun around so I would also tend to stay away from the levers as well, I have shot 30-30's that kicked as hard as an 06. You can always buy a recoil pad like a Pachmayer Decelator or Sims Limbsaver. If you get a synthetic stock you can add weight to reduce the recoil. As for as the scope goes when you buy a package gun the optics are usually not that high quality. Shop around, Savage is probably your best value followed by Howa. Don't discout the used racks great deals to be had.

7mm 08 Got a Weatherby youth 7mm 08 for my boy las Christmas. They got their first deer each last season at the age of 10 and 6. I did my homework looking for a good deer rifle with low recoil. Many consider the 7mm 08 to be the perfect whitetail rifle.
