Default Deer Hunting With Your Nose

It works! I was out walking today and smelled a HORRIBLE odor, the wind was blowing in circles, and it took me a little while, but I finally found the source of the smell. It was a nice 6 pointer, with about 10 million maggots working at its Chest.

AND THEN

I was on my way out of the woods, and what happens? I smell it again! Then I look down and see a piece of rotton meat with maggots all over it. I walk a lil farther, and theyre covering the ground. And then I see the reason theyre all there. ANOTHER Dead buck. This time a 2 pointer.

Im thinking that its EHD. Its bad in my area right now, and that just upset me to find them. The 6 pointer was out of velvet, but the 2 point had velvet still. It makes me wonder about the big boys that are running around out there, hopefully theyre still running.

So you hunt maggot infested dead deer where you are from? Are they some kind of local traditonal food or what?
Too bad, always a shame when deer die of anything than me shooting them or old age.
I am thankful that MN has a very healthy whitetail population.

They call it EHD.. deer have been dropping everywhere. Not just 10 or 15, but hundreds have been reported around my area. The reason they get it is because theyre getting bit by biting midges. They also say that EHD should vanish after the first frost. Im hoping it does.

EHD (Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease) is from a biting fly or Midge that occurs in the summer through early fall and comes to a quick hault after the first frost. In SouthWestern PA we had a couple of outbreaks from very south to about 65 miles north. Some of the numbers I heard about dead carcusses ranged from 55 to 100 per infected county. I have heard that the symptoms are similiar to CWD? And that the deer typically expire near water sources because of thirst. I think is is natures way of herd management.
