I have 2 VERY scary stories to tell. But I don't have time right now - going fishing is on the agenda!

The first one involves an encounter with a black panther and the other involves an old indian warrior who happened by me while I was hunting!

NOTE AND DISCLAIMER!!!!!

These are very, very scary stories
and should not be told to smaller
children - especially near bedtime!

Here in Missouri, one cool early morning I went out in the dark walking the path like I always do. I was half way to my stand when I hear a noise just ahead of me so I look up and see a large black panther mating with a red one. They seamed to begoing at it pretty hot and heavy so I just let them be and walked around them. I got up the patha ways and got a little mad that theywere trespassing so I went back and slapped the red one a couple of times and they ran off never to be seen again. This really happened, I had pictures butan NHRArepresentativetook them away from me.:D

One morning a few years back, couldnt sleep, so I went to the club a little earlier, took my time , unloaded the fourwheeler, loaded it up, went on my mile treck through the woods. Well it was around 5:45, climbed my tree very quietly, pulled everything up, set back and relaxed. I nodded off for about ten minutes, still pitch black, all of the sudden an owl that was about ten feet higher than me let out a screach that would wake the dead. I about came out of my tree lounge, "luckily I was strapped in", after I got my nerves back, " and cleaned out my shorts" I had a pretty good chuckle.

Last year third day of bow season got to my stand a little early and i was sitting there listening to the songbirds sing away whe in flew to hoot owls fighting with each other about 5 feet to my right on a limb. Liked to give me a heart attack at first then i just shook the limb and returned the heart attack back to them.

During bow season last year I had a bear try to climb into the stand with me. He was very persistant and it took a couple of boots to the nose to get him down. He didn't just run away though, he circled around for awhile. It was a little scarry walking out of the bush after dark for I wasn't sure if he was still around.

One fall afternoon I was sittingon the crest of a ridge squirrel hunting just enjoying the calmness of the woods, when what sounds like a flame thrower appears to be coming straight through the woods at me. This sound caused a flock of turkeys to come flying straight towards me. Then a fewdeerand squirrels gorunning by me. Thenevery bird in the forest goes flying by. Iwasn't sure if I was supposed tojoinall of theseanimals in this mass exodus or not so I just sat there as the sound comescloser andcloser.I was really thinking that somethingterrible could be coming through the woodswhenall of a sudden a hot air balloon comes overhead and decends into thevalley bellow. It is funny to think about now but at the time it scared thecrap out of me.

Nothing too scary but as I was walking a fire lane in Southern Illinois a few years ago I kicked up a covey of quail. Right at the base of a bush trail side. Middle of the day, I just had to stop and take a few deep breaths.

Well I have one from last year, this being the most prominent in my memory. I was out checking some trapsafter work, probably about 11pm. nice and dark. i got about 150 yards into the woods with me and my buddy. we had out nightlites but had them off just walking by what moonlight we had. i took a step and heard something that sounded like a cross between a elk/coyote/human making a really really loud yawning type noise. and it sounded like under 15 yards from us but we where under abunch of tree cover and could barely see our trail. needless to say thats the fastest i think i've ever drew a peace in my life. we had lights all over the place and yet we never saw anything. after about 20 seconds we heard something running over the crest of the hill but i still don't know what it was. i just hope we scared it as much as it did us. i'm quite familiar with the animals here and don't mind trapsing around in the dark appalachians at night but i don't know what it was and kept my handgun in one hand the rest of the night.

When I was 12, I sat my stand by myself for the first time. I was about 7/8 of a mile into the woods... pretty long walk. Anyway, it was just past legal hunting time... pitch black. I was climbing down my stand; when I got to the second step, I heard a hideous bloodcurdling bobcat scream about 50-75 yards away... I almost fell out of my stand. I thougt, "I'll just sit here in the stand a bit longer" :D. I sat for about 10 minutes longer, when I heard it again; this time MUCH closer. I figured then it was time to skedaddle! Needless to say, being 12 years old I hauled ass! I heard it again this time very faint because I was a good bit aways from my stand. I didn't stop until I got to my camper.

When I was 12 (again), I climbed into my stand. It was the first day of the season and already hot. I could hearowls wayoff hooting to each other, just like they do every time a go hunting. The sun came up and began to beat down on me, and I drifted off. I don't know for how long, when a hoot owl stealthily landed on a limb behind me and let out screech. Thats the highest any of yall would see a white boy jump :D:D:D

A friend and I were bowhunting one year and we both
had gone to our stands. We were hunting in the mountains
of Virginia where there are a lot of black bears here where
we live.So after it was time to come off the deer stand I
went down off the mountain down by the creek where the
old trail we walked in and waited for my friend to come on
out.It had gotten dark by then and I could see his flashlight
coming out of the mountain till he hit the trail and started
walking down it.For some reason I thought it would be fun to
scare him.I got behind a large oak tree and put my bow down.
Walking down the path about the time he got to my tree he
had no idea I was there I let him get about 10 feet past it and
I screamed out as loud as I could sounding out like a Black bear
and took off running towards him and scared him so bad the
flashlight went up and down about 5 or 6 times and he dropped
to his knees it scared him so bad.Never laughed so hard in my
life before. He threatened to get me back for a week for that but
even he thought it was funny after he thought about it.Even
today I stiil chuckle about that time as such good memories always
last.

Lets see I was climbing down from my stand, fell 20ft and broke my back. Thats one of the worst feelings in the world. The other was having a turkey fly straight into my blind with me. I saw her and called and next thing I know here she come wings a flappin and smacks me in the head and lands in my blind. She didnt know what happened and she just walks out from the blind and starts yelping. I killed her friendTom 5 minutes later...

My brother and I were walking out of the woods one night when all of a sudden it sounded like the sky was fallen we spooked a big flock of turkeys off the roost. My brother was only about 11 years old then and he let out a scream like a little girl.

Many years agoI went to an afternoon stand in a swamp through knee deep ferns. After getting settled in my tree, I kept hearing rustling in the leaves where I had walked in. Finally catching movement, I discerned three separate pairs of the largest copperheads I had ever seen! Each pair was intertwined with half of their bodies raised up in the air facing each other swaying backand forth in the ferns. I had walked right through a breeding frenzy! Chill bumps ensued and I thought about having to walk out of there after dark. Needless to say, when that time came,I was light on my feet leaving there.Back at the clubhouse, one 87 year old hunter said that he had only seen that once in his life. I had witnessed a rarely seen event.

Well, my dad almost got shot square in the back one time at point blank range. We were rabbit hunting with my uncle and his beagles. As we were making our way along we noticed one of his beagles run up to another group of hunters. One of the guys in the group proceeded to kick the dog. Of course our group went over and had some pretty good words with them. As my dad turns to walk away all we hear is *BLAM*!!! Turns out one of the guys raised his shotgun and was just about to shoot my dad square in the back at 5 yards when his buddy slapped the gun down. The shot hit the ground a few inches to the right of my dad's feet. Once that happens everyone thinks they know what they'll do but believe me all that's going through your mind is lets get the hell outta here while they're all arguing.

RE: scary hunting stories

The worst part about wrestling in high school was that it happened to be during deer season and we always had a meet or scrimmage on the only Saturday of Ohio's shotgun season (back in the 90's Ohio had only a 1 weeks season that ran Monday to Saturday).

My senior year, we had a scrimmage on that particular Saturday that started at 7am and ran until 1, so basically a 6 hour straight wrestling practice with only water breaks. I was also cutting weight at that time from my football wt of 195 to my wrestling wt of 171, so I had pretty low energy level to begin with.

I got home from the scrimmage as my dad was about to head out for the afternoon (we hunted the woods right behind our house) and I decided I would gear-up quick and head out to my spot. It was about 30 degrees out, pouring down freezing rain/hail/sleet/cats and dogs with about a 20 MPH wind. Like an idiot, and like I usually tend to do, I had under-dressed and I was freezing. My hair hadn't even completely dried from my shower and my whole head felt frozen. I decided to tuck into a tight ball and duck down behind a fallen tree to try to hide from the wind. Needless to say, I fell asleep.

About a half hour after this, my dad decides that it's not worth it to him to sit out in this crap when it seems like the deer aren't even moving, so he heads over to tell me he was heading in. About 20 yards from me, he realizes not only am I sound asleep, I'm also snoring. He contemplates rattling a round off into a tree to scare the hell out of me, but decides to look around instead.

While he's looking around, he spots something move about 20 yards in front of me, it's a big fat doe staring right at me trying to figure out what the hell I am and what kind of noise I'm making. Dad tries to wake me up by saying my name as soft as he can, but it's useless I'm out cold. Being that we usually only got 1 deer a year between the 2 of us (possibly due to me sleeping 75% of the time on stand) and that we didn't have one yet that year, dad decides to take the shot.

I'm deep in lala land somewhere on a beach in Cancun with Jenny McCarthy sipping margaritas when all of the sudden I hear a gun blast from 20 yards away, I wake up realizing there's a gun on my lap and immediately try to figure out who the hell is shooting at me, meanwhile my dad's laughing his ass off.

Needless to say, he brings that story up every year around deer season. [&o]

2 years ago he shot his biggest buck ever, an 11 pt, and I got to call him 2 weeks later and tell him about my 13 pt, so I'd say it's even now:D

One of the scariest things ever is whenever your getting you paper at 4:00 in the morning before heading to the camp, and a screech owl about 25 yrds away hoots.

I was hunting on my friends, grandfathers lease in South Louisiana(SOUTH, SOUTH, SOUTH Louisiana), in a ladder stand on opening day of the early MZ season. It was hot and the deer werent moving. I started eating an apple and I guess it smelled it. A bear came out of the woods, he mustve been at least 300 lbs. I'd seen tracks before, but never actually seen a big black bear. He was very interested in my apple. He slightly attempted to climb the stand. He was close enough where I was actually about to cock my gun and shoot him(self defense). Something in the woods spooked him and he took off.

RE: scary hunting stories

I had a stand in SC on an old tea/rice plantation (now a paper company holding), that was located right along an old dyke, by the old homeplace.

For whatever reason, this stand (ladder stand) would occasionally start shaking violently, almost as if someone was climbing up the ladder. I used to think it was high winds I couldn't hear or see moving the top of the tree... but it was totally still. The ground is fairly moist, and Charleston does sit on a fault line... tremors maybe... I don't know.

I always told guests I brought there that the stand was haunted... and they always came back to the truck white as a sheet!

I honestly just think it was because I had the stand strapped in VERY tight. My very small movements or who knows what might have caused reverbreations in the metal of the stand, sort of like a drum. Freaked me out bad at first, but I shot a heck of a lot of deer out of that stand!

The worst I've ever been scared was when I was walking to my Deer Stand at 4:30 AM in the total darkness and when I reached my stand to climb upin it about 12 Turkeys flew off their roost and the sound and racket 'bout gave me a heart attack. [:@]

Last year I was climbing down from my climbing stand and I kept hearing something walking in the dry leaves as I was slowly descending I kept trying to pin-point where and what was making the noise? When I reached the bottom of the tree I pulled out my LED light and shined it around....then there it is..... a Big black & white skunk roaming around in the leaves so I back out slowly to the logging road and run up the hill away from Mr. Stinky.

In the late evenings when I'm Bow Hunting the Coyotes start to howl around our Farm so I have been carrying my rabbit call along with me and tried to call them in closer....it gets kinda scary when it starts getting pretty dark and I have to walk back by myself and I'm wondering just how close are they when I have to climb down and head back home when it is too dark to shoot at the deer but the Coyotes arejust starting to be on the prowl....!!!! ZOINKS

I was hunting my stand in South Louisiana and the mosquitos were horrible. I was rubbing my face to keep them off when all of a sudden a hawk appears with his talons coming right toward my face at about 3 feet. The hawk immediately realized that I was not the squirell or bird that he thought and was flapping his wings like crazy to try and get out of there. I almost fell out of the tree trying to avoid the hawk that scared the crap out of me. I think about it now and smile, but at the time it was not funny at all.

Last year late in the season, I was sitting my stand on the edge of a field. There was no activity, and it was getting pretty dark. Boredom began to take over when 3 American Kestrels began scanning the fields... probably for rabbits and rodents. I don't know what I did to attract their attention, but the next thing I know, all 3 of them are screeching and false charging me! They would randomly fly straight towards me while calling, and then at the last second they would cut a dime to the left or right and repeat the process. I figured enough was enough, so I took a decent size stick from a limb beside me and chucked it at him the next time one of them took a straight shot at me. Haha :D:D:D! I hit that hawk right on his dome! He kinda shuttered and flew off. He sounded kinda angry when he was retreating. His buddies followed...

More my stupidity than scary. Went bow hunting in full camo a couple of times during squirrel season on public hunting land.As I was walking through the thick stuff, the silence of the woods was broken by a shotgun at about 20 yards, didn't even see the guy through the brush. Another time I was in my stand and had a guy shoot up into a tree next to me, heard a bunch of shot hitting the leaves above me.

Now I have some orange on when I walk in or out, tie some orange around the tree when in the stand.

One of my hunting buddies said that one of his friends was bowhunting in the morning for deer in the woods, near a river, and as he was glassing, this bobcat shrieked 25 yards or less from his stand, and it scared the heck, crap and sanity right out of him, lol.

I always carry my glock for instances just like that. If anyone would have even fired a shot in my Dad's direction I would easily draw down on them. I am about protecting my family first, and worried about the consequences only later. That is just plain nuts, and I am glad no one got hurt.

Last season I was sitting in my stand watching a coon piddle around in the creek about 10 feet from my stand. He worked his way behind me and then all of a sudden I hear something big crashing through the leaves and I hear the most awful screech/scream/gut wrenching shrill I have ever heard. I just got real still and didn't move. I was almost too scared to turn around and look behind me. I then hard the sound of crunching bones and slowly turned around to see this huge bobcat chowing down on that coon I was just watching. It scared me to death when the coon screamed. I swear, it made the most horrible sound I have ever heard. I can't even begin to try and describe it.

No question, it was while a group of us were standing around planning a hunt when a large lab came running out of the bush and knocked over one of the guys, he fell backwards and the butt of his lever gun hit hard on a flat rock while I looked down the barrel (tried to react but it took a 1/2 second to happen).
Just another reason to only hunt with safe people that use their safety's and empty their chambers around camp.

Well it was 3:15 sometime after school when me and a couple buddys decided we were gonna wake up at 3:30 and do some yote hunting we had no specific location but had 4 places we could go we decided to try a farmers land that we knew well and said it was ok to take the pesky yotes off the land whenever we felt like it, well we go set up in a ditch line with a few trees and right next to a field, we set the tape recorder up and let it run and did some calling we waited 45min or so and nothing so we decided to pack up and walk out to a new location when we heard something traveling through the marshgrass behind us, almost as if something was following us, so we turned around and shined are flashlights in the direction, sure enough about 70 yards away were 3 coyotes, making quite a bit of noise so we turned the spotlight on just to make sure and sure enough 3 coyotes i was the one carrying the spotlight at the time so both my friends put there guns up and each fired 1 time, coyotes scattered right and left, we went to go look to see if we hit one but werent sure where or how far theyd been so we came back later that morning to find a nice coyote.:)

I got the scare of a lifetime while walking to my stand one morning well before daybreak. I used the paved road to cut the distance and as I stepped of the asphalt and onto the dry leaves in the culvert, I hear the most god awful scream right in front of me. I was frozen with fear and didn't even bring my rifle up out of terror. A few seconds later I hear something walk off but I didn't get my flashlight up in time to identify it. Could've been a bobcat or sometimes deer can scream like that I was told. So much for trying to walk in by moonlight.

As for owls, I had two Barred owls flare 3 ft from my face while turkey hunting a few years ago. They liked my calls and detected the slight movent of my hand on the stick and slate. Must of looked like a meal to them and they were on me beforeI could even register what was happening. Owls feathers are shaped for silent flight and man are they effective.
