BHUNTER 50,,,,,,, Ultra Slug Hunter's are single shots, and I have a T/C Omega. H&R's USH's are bull barreled slug guns, meaning they have an extremly heavy barrel. They break open like an over and under, so you can only put in, 1 slug at a time... I am a firm believer in making your first shot count..

I think the 12 gauge is fine if you can handle the recoil, but I also know that most people shoot better when the recoil is less. I've shot the H&R 20 gauge, and my friend hunts with one- I've been very impressed. Accuracy is incredible for a slug gun, and recoil is minimal. With lightfield sabots my friend has taken deer as close as 30 yards and as far as 120 yards. None have gone more than a few yards after being hit. Yes, you lose a little power on the 12 gauge, but if you put that slug in the deer's boiler room, it's not going anywhere.

im seriously considering a 12G slug barrel for my encore and throwing a 2x7 or 3x9 up top, i shoot a 12g wingmaster/hastings barrel with an aimpopint up top right now, using buckhammers i can shoot 3 shot cloverleafs @ 50 yards. but its really ammo picky. i am assuming it will shoot hastings slugs equally well since they are basically the same, but the hot new 1800fps plus rounds it hates and wont stablize at all. i here the encores and H&R's shoot most all slugs extremely well, and i cant find a used A-bolt anywhere so thats not an option right now.anyways back to your question, go with the 12g. ballistically, most all 12g slugs are better than 20's, accuracy is the same, obviously the 12carries more energy which is important on longer shots because slugsshed energy FAST dowwnrange. and probably most important, go to any sporting goods store, the 12g selection is most always at least 5X greater than the 20g selection

I bought a 20 ga H&R last year and it is a dream. Topped with a Leupold VX-II 3x9x50 -- need a lot of light in the late afternoon. Shoot the Hornady SST's. Very accurate. If you don't already own a blackpowder, you may want to considerbuying one in lieu of the slug gun, but buy a good one - TC Encore or Omega 50 cal. Except for all the stuff you have to carry with the b/p, the "one shot" application is the same. Plus, the b/p is less weight and will give you longer effective range over the slug gun. I'm on the small size (5'7") so the weight of the 20 ga is better for me.

Both great I tend to stick w/ the 12 ga. I stand hunt so toting a few extra lbs is not a consideration. Also seems to be more ammo choices for the 12 ga Can't go wrong either way!!! A no lose situation that doesn't happen all that often enjoy your dilemma.

I use a 20 gage with Foster slugs, it drops them like a bad habit at up to 75 yards if you put it where it needs to go. I could probably get 100 yards out of it if I changed from FO rifle sights to a scope.
