deer hunting with dogs
What do you think of deer hunting with dogs? I personally love the tradition of it, as I was introduced to itfiveyears ago (my dad is a still-hunter). I live in north florida where hunting like this on large tracts of land is still possible. I still hunt ever chance I get during bow and muzzleloader season, and usually harvest more bucks during both than I ever would running dogs. I am just curious to what other hunters think, as running dogs seems to be a dwindling tradition.

RE: deer hunting with dogs
Not this again. I'll give you a quick summary from last seasons thread(which you might be able to pull up in a search). The thread was somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 pages and what I basically concluded was:
1. Some people love it. 2. Some people hate it. 3.Some people don't know much about actually doingit. |
RE: deer hunting with dogs
Uhh, lets see, dog hunters are a bunch of lazy slobs who just sit in their pickups drinking beer and eating pickled pig feet until the dogs run a deer to the point of exhaustion and it comes to a complete stop 10 feet from the tailgate at which time they shoot it and then head back to the trailer park and leave the dogs to fend for themselves. And while we are on the topic of hunting with dogs, any kind of dog hunting that i have never done and do not understand is unsportsmanlike. Lastly, any form of dog hunting that causes the slightest disturbance within a two mile radius of where i am deer hunting should be banned. Does that sum it up for some of you fellas.

Here is the link to the last memorable dog hunting thread.
RE: Get your Deer Dogs and Get Out Make sure you start on page 1 because the link will take you to page 28 I think. I don't know how to get a link to the threadwithout the orange search terms still highlighted. |
RE: deer hunting with dogs
sorry, I should have known this thread was somewhere on the site!!! I didnt mean to beat a dead horse
|
RE: deer hunting with dogs
Its a very popular dead horse to beat though. I think that this topic comes up and turns into a multi-page axe-grinding threat about three times a year.

Yet you give out the top secret information of the traditional consumption of pickled food products! You hipocrit you. Heck you still hold the record for eating pickled eggs for theMoose lodge's Rod & Gun club. |
RE: deer hunting with dogs
What about one man and one dog, still hunting together? Ever thought of it? Ever done it?
|
RE: deer hunting with dogs
are you SURE you have never been dog hunting? That is a vivid description!! haha

RE: deer hunting with dogs
Why am i not surprised to see Uncle Matt (AKA "the stray beagle slayer") pop up here.
I'll have you know that i do not consume pickled pork hocks while sitting in my pick-up waiting for the deer to come running right up to my truck. I have found that having a jar of pigs feet and a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon sitting on my dashboard causes confusion. Too many times I have been distracted by the baying of the hounds and end up chugging pickle juice instead of beer. It can get even more confusing since most dog hunters chew Red Man tobacco or dip Skoal and end up using an empty PBR can as a spitton. A mouthful of tobacco spit is even worse than the pickle juice. So, those of us who are really traditionally go with pigskins instead of pigs feet. |
RE: deer hunting with dogs
It's the empty cheerwine bottle or the wafflehouse coffee cup for the spittoon, not the PBR can. A sack of recycled cans gets another 6 pack! ;)

RE: deer hunting with dogs
The only thing that should be legal to hunt with dogs is feral cats and then only on Sunday with a cross bow behind a high fence.
And the only vehicle allowed is a two wheel drive ford truck made between the years of 1972 & 1984 .[:o] And Onlyany food that can be safely eaten aftersitting in a jar ona bar at room temperature for months on end can be consumed while partaking in this time heralded sport. The only thing that needs served chilled is the 30 pac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

RE: deer hunting with dogs
Won't get much interest in this thread until the season starts and someone runs a dog across your land and spooks the 165 BC buck that you have been trying to kill for a couple of years.:D
|
RE: deer hunting with dogs
Well grizz, that sounds like the anti-dog hunters version of a dear penthouse letter. Its the kind of thing that happened to a friend of a friend's half-brother's cousin. But, if you haven't been able to kill a deer on your own land after going after it for years, i guess that a dog running across your property is as good an excuse as any. I once missed the buck of a lifetime because someones beagle yelped while chasing a feral cat in the next creek bottom over and it spooked a 30 point buck away from my stand for the entire season.
|
RE: deer hunting with dogs
Just think how these Q.D.M. people would feel if one of these bone crunching beagles chased off their quota of Doe.
I've heard said that once a deer is chased by a dog the meat becomes tainted and even weeks later you can tell. ![]() |
RE: deer hunting with dogs
On the other hand, a deer shot by someone in a deer stand tastes like prime rib eye and will literally melt in your mouth, even when its off an over-the-hill doe.
And when you have a semi-tame herd of feeder fattened deer who wants stuff chasing them and making them wild anyway |
RE: deer hunting with dogs
Its 5% of the people who do it causing 100% of the problems. And its the same people who cause issues around everything else they do. The hunters who are driving blocks of private property, saying they are looking for dogs, folks who run their dogs during spring turkey season (a favorite of mine), and people who stand on the hard surface road for the non-hunting public to see. There again, 5% causing 100%. But, these are the same guys who start fights with umpires at little leauge games, knock over women and children to catch a foul ball at the Braves game, driver a 2500 HD with lots of stickers and never put it in 4x4, and probably don't remove their hat or place their hand over their heart during the national anthem. Its only a hunting problem, because these jerks hunt. The fact that they hunt with hounds is just a method of attacking the means.

Ultrasoft Baby Dawgs - $25.00
![]() I recommend these. ;):D |
RE: deer hunting with dogs
Its not just the dog hunters in that 5%. I've seen people throw temper tantrums and get downright violent because someone dared to walk within 400 yards of their stand, or who gets their panties in a wad if someone puts up a stand anywhere near a property line, or if someone dares to ask to trail a wounded deer on their land. The fights over "ownership" of stand sites by people who don't even own the land can be both funny and disturbing.
Something about deer hunting that can bring out the worst in folks and make them engage in the hunters version of running over a little kid to grab a foul ball. |

Lanse couchecoucheyou have no right to call any hunter if he or she runs dogs a lazy bunch of slobs ,you have no respect and you also have no idea of what me and probably a lot of other people think about you. Why does someone always have to start calling other fellow hunters names every year , this is rediculous. you need to go run dogs and find out all whats its about. |

Hunters in general (and lets not forget about tournament bass fishermen) are truely some of the greediest people I have ever met. Now, lets not point fingers. And there are of course thousands of big time exceptions. But I will say this....if I find a spot where the ducks are coming in like we were handing out free cookies...and its public water....my lips are sealed. Why? Cause I'm greedy just like everyone else is. That doesn't mean I don't spread the wealth. There are several folks I hunt with that I take to such spots, espeically ones with kids who are just getting into hunting. I found the place....and you can find it too. And if we meet each other there...then we'll share a blind and probably become good friends...but that doesn't mean I'm gonna post up the GPS coordinates for the whole world to see. |

Southern Buck, Lance is being sarcastic and basically lumping together a lot of the common responses you hear on "dog" threads. Read the link I posted earlier and you will understand. Besides, who doesn't like pickled pigs feet and beer. What if they could make pickled pig foot flavored beer or beer flavored pickled pigs feet? Now that there would be something to start a thread about, ummmmmmmmmm ummmmmmmmm!! |

In all seriouness if it is legal for someone to do it, then who am I to say they can not do so. With that said I personally do not find deer hunting with dogs to be attractive to me or very fair chase.

If you have enough land leased or owned there is no way better way to deer hunt than with a good pack of hounds, IMHO.

RE: deer hunting with dogs
I have never attended any deer hunts with dogs as they are illegal here in WI. I know they use this tactic in other countries to get the red stag moving and other large game animals and it gives me mixed emotions. I wont bash it as I have never done it but yet I wont tolerate any dog chasing deer on my land. A dog chasing deer in WI is as good as dead, stray or not. But i can see in some parts of the country where it is legal why some people do it, as in surrounded by swamp or woods so thick that a child cant even get through them, and in very over populated deer herd areas. If I was to attend a deer hunt with dogs im not sure how id take it or if id really enjoy it as I have been hunting with out them all my life.

RE: deer hunting with dogs
wow i didn't think there were that many fellow hunters that would condem another sportsman way of life. yes dog hunting was a of life for some who have had the honor to be a part of that tradition. i grew up with dog deer hunting i remenber getting up at 2:00 am and sleeping on the front porch of my uncles untill he got up to go. we would ride up in the wood and get out and follow him and pugs his dog in the dark for miles and he would put us on stand then he would take pugs and start making drive and it wouldn't be long and he would jump one and sometimes we would get one but most of the time my uncle would kill him if he was a buck. we never shot does well if we did my uncle would cut a limp and woop our tails.we didn't kill every deer we got after you be supprised at 90 % got away. the way you people talk we killed everything we went after most of you stand hunter kill a lot more deer that dog hunters. and we didn't bait them either every deer we killed fed our families and i mean we had to have the meat or we didn't eat. as i got older i realy got the dog hunting fever i always had 3 or 4 dog and that part of raising the black and tan and walker puppies was the most enjoyable thing. watching them grow up and make a good deer dog was like seeing your youngin make the ball team. it wasn't only like some of you think that we tried to kill everything we could most of the time i averaged killing 2 to 5 deer a year all buck like i said still today i don't like shooting does so i let most of you do that .i won't condem you for shooting them i just can't look in those big brown eyes and pull the trigger lol. there are a few that make the dog hunter look like a buntch of drunk idiots but there are those kinds in all hunting methods. dog hunting was good up untill the mid eighties and all the land got leasted up and it got to be to much bitching so i quit after my best and last dog pete died he was a true friend and hunting buddy and i will never stop hearing him bark when i'm in the stand and it quiet and i start day dreaming. i think l loved the dog part alot more than killing the deer because if i shot him the hunt would be over. please just walk in my shoes and youwill never condem another hunter of his way of hunting ever again. its hard enough tring to keep the bleeding heart tree hugger off us (can't we just get along)
