It is uncommon, but some deer don`t loose their velvet. I`m sure someone on here knows the reason, I have heard it before, but don`t remember.

If a buck loses his testicles (like jumping over a fence) he will stay in velvet.

I killed a 4 year old spike several years back in full velvet in January. He had no testicles.

It is true if a buck gets castrated and is in velvet he will not only stay in velvet but will keep the rack.I saw a buck with a full rack in Pa during spring turkey season one year and found out that is why he never shed his rack.

Probably a hemaphrodite deer. It is a natural 1:10,000 occurance where the deer has both male and female sex organs. The hormones get screwed up, thus the velvet in winter. Happens in humans too.
