RE: deer rifle

Where is Deerhunter2006?!?! He posted and left. I went back and read his previous posts to get a little more info that he SUPPOSEDLY already has a 45-70 and a 270. IF the guy is JUST deer hunting, he is pretty well covered, BUT as some have suggested, IF he intends to hunt larger game, he may actually have a need for the 7mm Mag or 300 Win Mag.

Oh where, Oh where has deerhunter2006 gone?

I don't think this kid has a clue as to what he wants or needs, if you read his other posts it seems like he just reads about a cartridge and then has to have it. He's worried about the price of a 700 Sendero but yet wants a 7mmrum and a 257 weatherby. Both of which are $50 or better for a box of shells???

This sounds like my brother who has the best of every piece of hunting gear but hardly ever uses any of it.

Anyway, a 300 mag is probably overkill on deer. For a better all around deer cartridge that is capable of reaching out to 400 yards (I wouldn't shoot that far due to large chance of injury), a better cartridge would probably be the 270 WSM. 270 WSM is plenty for any deer. You also get to say you are shooting a "magnum."

P.S. Got a 270WSM last year, but before that a plain old 270 or 30-06 never let me down.

depends on your style. personally I'm a leverman and shoot no other centerfire. i'd recommend the new .308 Marlin Express. Or possible a 444 XLR Marlin. If you practice yourself at the longer ranges you can do the job well with either.

HI, im a very big deerhunter and im gonna be hunting in the thickects half of the season and the rest in fields and i will be taken shots between 100 to 400 yards and was wondering what caliber would you suggest to use cause thier is about amillion to choose one!i was leaning towards the 7mm mag and 300mag what would yall suggest!
If you plan on 400yd shots, go with the 7mm mag.

From what I read from poster I would think 30-06 or 270 All Day - Any Day is all this shooter needs out to 300yrds.Lets face it there are VERY FEW hunters out there that can stretch a shot past 200 - 250 let alone 400 yrds! Spend the money on a Good Scope and mounts. When you get to be a Big Game - Long Range - Hot Shot move up in caliber. My .02

You don't need another gun. Unless you just want to buy one. Your 270 will shoot just as flat as the 7 mag.

Hey Skeeter... just curious if you've had any experience with the 7 WSM? Is there much difference in oerformance from the Rem Mag? I think I may look into one. Just curious since the name and all... thanks
Not a lot but what experience I have had with a 7 wsm was it didn't live up to expectations with 160gr + bullets, 140 and 150's fine but the longer bullets in the short fat case cause some losses ( not uncommon with the WSMs and heavy for caliber bullets). I am not so sure about the 7wsm's longevity either, sale here are low and it appears this isn't a blip on the radaras it isn't doing that well elsewhere either!

IMHO if your wanting a short action deer rifle in .284 cal then the wellestablished 7-08 isa nice package. If you don't mind a LA or wanting a rifle for more then deer regularily then I suggest going with the established 280 rem, 7mm rem mag or 7mm STW. The 7mm RUM offers little over the STW in performance and it's future isn't really bright either. What the LA cases do give you is the benefit of the heavy for caliber bullets, their is simply nothing a 160 or 175/.284 won't do that a 180/200gr .308, anything short of grizzlies, both equally capable IME.

Since you already own a 300wsm no real benefit to adding a 7mm wsm but ifyou're wanting something a little smaller and like what the wsm offers why not pick one that has a bright future, AKA the .270wsm.
