RE: deer rifle
Deerhunter2006: I know you asked between a 7mm and 300 mag originally, so I would definately go with the 300 mag. Its pretty straight forward why. Just look at the ballistics between the 2. 7mm would be my second choice so I'm not saying its bad. You can use the 300 for everything from deer to elk or moose depending on bullet used. I would stay away from the .30-06 there is simply flatter shooting with the 300, its basically the same bullet with more powder in the 300 anyway. Good for the long shots youre talking about. Goodluck.

RE: deer rifle
7mm rem mag, it will do anything the 300wm will but with less recoil & powder. 300wm makes it's hay with 180-200gr bullets and these really aren't required for the likes of deer. Though like stated if you already have a 45-70 and 270win you got all you need for your stated usage/requirements.
TGH, the 300wm and 3006(ect) use the EXACT same bullet all .308 caliber based cartridges.;) |
RE: deer rifle
The 7MM Mag would be my choice. I agree with skeeter because us prairie boys are used to reaching out to touch them. Excellent flat line balistics.

RE: deer rifle
I was going to reply that if it is only deer that you are after then a .270 win would be about the ideal rifle. Pushing a 130 gr bullet it's about the same as a 7mm Rem Mag pushing a 150 gr but the 130 gr bullet should be plenty for even a big mule deer IMO.
The 300 win mag is a heck of a gun, but a bit overkill for deer if that's all you are after IMO. The 7mm Rem Mag is a fine gun and it's the one I chose, but that's because I want to throw an ocassional elk into the mix. If I was just after deer and smaller (a .270 win is also an excellent antelope gun) I would have gone with a .270 win. So if you already have a .270 win and you really will only be using the rifle for deer then get a nicer .270 win (like a Kimber Montana or Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker) or put some money into a nicer scope or put your money in a savings account for something else. My 2 cents. Nathan |

Hey Skeeter... just curious if you've had any experience with the 7 WSM? Is there much difference in oerformance from the Rem Mag? I think I may look into one. Just curious since the name and all... thanks
