Hunting partner or hunt alone?

I'm just seeing who here goes out with a hunting partner or goes alone. I really do not like hunting with someone else because I want to arrive and leave when I want to. I always feel obligated to abide the other persons time tables when I go with someone. That's why I hunt by myself 99.99% of the time. I'll take my kids whenever they want to go, but they know Dad is not on their time but they are on my time.

What about y'all?

i believe that hunting with a friend is the best because it seems that the memories that are made while hunting with a buddy last longer than the ones made while hunting alone.

+1 here.

I took a friend to my place in Oklahoma a couple of years ago, and it has become a "tradition" to him. I would love out of this "tradition" but can't see a way out without killing the friendship. My youngest son started going this past season, and now his son is wanting to go. The "tradition" is spiraling out of control.

Other than that one hunt a year, I am a hunting loner.

I really enjoy both. I would say I hunt alone about 60% of the time and with a buddy (90% of the time they same buddy) the other 40%.

When son is not on duty, he is my hunting partner....has been all his life. When forced to, the ole geezer does it solo. I too enjoy the camp life
of a group but fair pretty well either way....when alone and at altitude I simply pace myself and know my limitations.

Most of the time it ends up being where i hunt alone, and thats alright. But, i really like when you get to hunt with your buddies and the time you get to share with them and the stories that are told. It is also nice if you are hunting a new area, because you can go over what each other has seen and you get a better idea of what your new plan of attack will be.

I hunt by myself all of the time, because you dont have to worry if your partner is in the right spot or if he is up and walking around..I used to hunt with my brother in law, until i saw him shoot two does during buck only season.two differnt times...so i quit hunting with him and anyone else for that matter...I would love for my dad to hunt with me but that ain't gonna happen..I guess ill have to wait till i have my own kids...Don't think that'll be to long anyway:D.

both are great. hunting alone i have tons of time to reflect, relax, and just enjoy God's creation.

when my friend and I go hunting, we get into some deep conversations (whispering that is) and just love sharing the memories.

i hunt with friends and family. we scout together and hunt together. we drive our own vehicles so we can come and go as we please but it's always more fun to hunt with someone else (especially when you could use a hand dragging a deer). not to mention it's much safer to hunt with someone (fall out of tree stand, snake bite, lost, etc.).

RE: Hunting partner or hunt alone?

Most of theplaces I huntissome of same property my friends alsohunt. So on the weekends there isalmost someone there. During gun week we all get together and sit in the stands. We also drive deer together when the gun season starts to slow up a little. But after work I don't wait for someone to meet me there to hunt. During bow season guys are a little spread out and go solo. Also when I go out of state I always go with someone. It aint too fun in camp, in the mountains for days on end by yourself. Plus when packing in for miles the worst thing that can happen is getting hurt with no one around to help. I do know guys that have had bad experiences hunting with a partner never to hunt with someone again but to me that is silly and that what friendship is all about, ups and downs and not agreeing with someones actions but accepting it because your friends is whatfriendship all about. Alot of huntersalso don't like to hunt with someone becauseanother hunter may shoot that trophy they were after and to me that is just selfishness, but to each is own. To say I never had an argument with a friend over a stand location, access route to a stand, baiting to close to me, parking ect ect ect........is an understatement! But they are my friends, all 8 of the stupid SOB'shave been since the the second grade andmind you I am 36. Shoot, if it wasn't for huntin and fishin I doubt we would have stayed in contact all these years. Isn't that worth something more than being bitter over petty things in life? So 50% huntin with buds 15% with my son and 35% alone.

RE: Hunting partner or hunt alone?

Selfishness, I don't think so, I actually like to hunt and camp alone, I like my company and I'm usually more successful by myself. When you hunt with others whether you realize it or not it changes the dynamics of the hunt and you adjust to the situation. some people need others to enjoy their time in the woods I don't, I usually don't take pictures either I carry my memories in my mind, but thats me . About twice a year I hunt with friends and have a great time but my hunting with them is not as intense or as spiritual as my lone hunts. Most group hunts that I have been on are more of a communal get together than an intense hunt ie: weekend or once a year hunters rather than someone like myself who hunts year round.

I'll archeryhunt by myself, but when gun season rolls around I'll hunt with my kids,father-in-law, or a buddy. Both kinds of hunting is fun to me.

I hunt in a camp with about 25 people, but was the only one to bow hunt till this year, come oct. There will betwo other people, there isone other person also but I think he iskind of discouraged.I think the two that start this year will be determined hunters. I hate hunting by myself in the eveningif I shoot a deer late.

I prefer to hunt with just one friend. I have been burned a few times by taking someone to "my" properties. They tried going behind my back to gain access..... Needless to say they lost all rights to it. This year my son is going full time. His Diamond should be here Mon. or Tues.. We just finished Hunters Safety yesterday. I took it with him, needed the card anyhow. I havea good friend that will be leaving to guide in Montana, hate loosing a hunting partner, but he wants to guide and Milk River offered him a job.

IDk really, i guess i like doing both. I'll explain, i like hunting alone b/c then i really dont have to worry about my friend making noise b/c i move really stealthy through the woods and i like it just me versus the animal that im hunting. Then again if you have a friend you can share the experience with him/her and also teach them things they might not know. so i guess both are fine by me.

i like to hunt with a buddy its nice to have an extra pair of eyes out there looking for the deer that are coming in. also you can set up in two different places, so you can "surround" the deer as they walk thru the area you are, then shoot 'em.

I actually get more enjoyment of taking a friend and letting himshoot a deer, than me shooting one.
One of my friends put me on a nice 8 pointer this past year and he watched me arrow it.
I like hunting with friends.

I used to always hunt alone. But now I always hunt with my wife. Last season she went out every time with me, spending hundreds of hours pre-scouting and hunting. She's my bread and butter

Life is good

It is about a 50-50 split with me. I enjoy the aspects of hunting alone, but also enjoy the comaraderie around hunting with someone else.

RE: Hunting partner or hunt alone?

I "go" hunting with a buddy and we then split up and go to our own areas to sit in stand etc. It is more fun when there is someone there to share the experience after the hunt. I also thinkl in my situation it is safer. I have diabetes and always tell my hunting partner where I will be and what time we will meet up so that if something happens we can find each other. we also have a pair of the outdoor radios as backup against a fall or other unforeseen accident.

RE: Hunting partner or hunt alone?

Five of us college classmates get together on twodays each year to rabbit and quail hunt. It is also a reunion since we are widely dispersed. My son and i get together and deer hunt Thanksgiving weekend every year.

Used to deer turkey, and hog hunt withsome local folks. It was all a one way deal.i do a lot of of pre-season scouting. Theydo not. i built a lot of tree stands that they hunted from. Noneof those folks ever offered to help build or repair a tree stand but they always hunted from mine.

Alwaystold my hunting partners where the big bucks were. The final straw for me was when i askeda hunting buddy where his wife killed her nice buck. The reply: "It is a secret place." Told all of them to go to hades and am now a dedicated lone hunter.

Since i quit hunting with a group i have killedlotsmorehogs and turkeys, and got areally nice buck last fall.Moved several of the tree stands to isolated areas that suit my solitary way of hunting. Love it!!!

For those of you who hunt alone how do you pack your deer out? A hunting buddy always seems to come in handy when you shoot a 250lb deer a mile or two from the truck! (most places I've hunted don't allow you to leave the road even to retrieve your kill)

RE: Hunting partner or hunt alone?

I hunt alone about 50% of the time.

To me, hunting is the most sacred time I have each year with the exception of my family and career. Nature is my cathedral so to speak.

I have seen pretty muchmost of the scenarios hunting can build to socially. When it comes to serious trophy hunting, I hunt alone. The only exception to that would be archery elk hunting, as cooperation with another skilled hunter can up the odds. However, you must be prepared to reciprocate with your own time investment whether you get an elk or not.

I like to hunt with others when going remote. It is good to have someone else there who knows approximately where you are and vis-a-versa, but when it comes to actual locating and hunting I like to have my own territory. I prefer to hunt with persons of my approximate skill level, as we are able to confer equitably and learn from one another.

Hunting with kids, hunters of lesser skill levels, or those who are not as passionate as myself is desireable also. I enjoy the challenge of teaching others what I know, and learning a thing or two in the process. There is no greater joy than seeing success/happiness on another hunters face when you have helped them broaden their mental hunting realm.

I usually plan a half dozen or so serious trophy hunts for various species every year. I also plan doe hunts (usually with other folks) which I use to sharpen my skills and put meet in the freezer. Nothing like a good tasty doe to practice shot placement or long range shooting. There is usually plenty oftime left for various hunts which happen to "pop up" during the course of the seasons.

Ultimately, the more knowledge I gain with respect to hunting a particular species, the more I prefer to hunt alone where a trophy is concerned.

I could never be an outfitter, or a hunting video producer. My hunting time is entirely too valuable to trade for a few dollars (or even a lot of dollars). How much would you sell your favorite mount for? I bet it's much more than market value. That's not to say that hunting with someone who expects to be more successful because they are hunting with you is not a form of guiding. Or, that my small video library of summer/winter range, and a few select hunts now and then might not be worth somethingin the right market, but they are worth much more to me right where they sit on the shelf...waiting for those long winter months of idle viewing and building excitement for the next hunting season.

Bear season in Montana! Less than two weeks away!!!!

If i ever killed a 250 pound field dressed deer in OK i would pay four Mexicans $500 each to carry it out.

to have fun and good memories I hunt with a friends... to kill a buck im after, I'll go alone. Like said uptop, when you have someone with you you kinda have to go at their pace and do what they want.

when I'm after a good buck, I perfer to go alone since no one can slow me down to effect my hunt. Its all up to me in other words

npaden 04-04-2007 07:39 AM

RE: Hunting partner or hunt alone?

To clarify, I have yet to kill a deer or even hunt anything but birds in Texas. Every deer I've killed was in Montana and a 250lb deer is definetly a possibility there. And killing one several miles from the road is also a big possibility. The farther you get from the road the less likely you are to shoot a small one that's for sure! :D

I'm asking because I have always hunted with at least one other person and this year if I get drawn I will probably be going alone. Even if it is only a 1/2 mile from the road I will probably end up quartering it up to get it out if I'm by myself.

I'll hunt alone when I have to, but I prefer to have a buddy along. Just makes sense. Especially to help drag it out of the woods.
