The story in our family, passed on by honorable men is.My two uncles were treed by a buck who was distracted by a mean old cow dog,Butch.I know butch was mean because I bare scars to this day,as my mother said he took a piece out of me when I was three.
My father then wacked that old buck in the head with a axe and he ended up hanging in the barn.I have been hunting quite a while and have never seen that kind of behavior from a deer, but it is always present in my mind.I always make sure they are glazed over before I get within range. My uncles are still alive,They both agree it happened.
Ny Uncles are in their 70's today and every year at Christmas,The story of mean old "Butch" is relived.and enjoyed.

according to statistics that I read a couple of years ago, guess which animal kills more human beings in the U.S. than any other?

...yep.. whitetail deer.

I don't know if deer hit by cars, and causing accidents was in that data, or not, but it's still pretty sobering. Also heard a story about a buck in rut that killed an older man who was out picking up aluminum cans..then stood over the body and wouldn't let anyone get near... they had to kill the buck to recover the old man's body. Bucks get pretty crazy during the rut....

About 15 years ago I was walking my german Shorthair around the farm I lived on when the dog started baying like a coon hound. When I came around the corner of the woodline, I saw my dog face to face with a monster 10 point along the edge of a marsh. The buck had his rack lowered at the dog and I was sure my dog was about to be gored. I yelled till I was hoarse from 40 yds but was totally ignored by both of them. I moved in and found a large branch. When I got to about 15 yds. the buck crashed by between the dog and me. I threw the log ahead of my dog to keep him from chasing the deer and managed to grab him by the collar. When I looked up the buck was on his back kicking to right himself. He'd hooked an antler on a monkey vine and took a spill about 40 yds. away. I hauled the dog out into the field and looked over to see Mr. Big standing in the field with a piece of vine hanging from an antler. I started walking away with the dog in tow and the buck started closing the distance. I ducked into the treeline and stood behind a screen of honeysuckle. The deer came all the way over and when his rack began to appear at the other end of the cover, 20 feet away. I took off down the field with the dog in tow.
The animal crossed the field walking in circles and was drooling. I called the DNR who sent two agents down to the farm. We drove out the lane and saw the buck about 100 yds. away walking down the field edge by a large block of timber. The officers said "He sure looks pretty healthy. Beautiful buck." I said yea, but he's crazy. They said "let's get out and have look". We went to the edge of the field and they started clapping their hands. The buck looked up and kept walking our way. Now at about 75 yds., they started clapping and hollering again. The buck lowered his rack and came charging like a bull. You've never seen two officers move so fast getting back in that cruiser.
The buck was last seen walking slowly into the woods and there was no word of him again. This animal was a 160-170 class deer. Its not something I'll ever forget. Scared the crap outa me.

I don't ususally use drag lines, since I hunt an area with a lot of rose vines and other snagging crap, but I pour estrous on some padded webbing that I strap around my boots, and I've had bucks come up my trails fast smelling it, but never got rushed from that.

However, two years ago, I was hunting a ground blind, and a spike buck, fat body walked out 400 yrds off, and was winding me. I swung my rifle slowly, and scoped him in, just to watch him. He threw up his head after a bit and looked right at me, then came bolting at me full bore. He got about 30 yrds off and wasn't veering, so I started wiggling really big, so he'd see me, still kept coming, so I started talking to him and stood up, still kept coming, he got to ten feet or so and I shot him, he landed at my feet. I don't know what he was planning to do to me, but I figured better safe than sorry.

Odd thing is, it seems the number of anti-hunters (or at least those persons that really don't care for hunting all that much) that meet their maker this way are disproportionately high. Wonder if the deer are trying to send them a message? And, if so, will they notice?<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

during the rut if you end up in the wrong place at the wrong time you could be in for a serious a$$ whoopin. a buddy of mine had a stand off w/a buck one nite in a field after he got down out of his tree stand. the buck's hair was raised on his back from the base of his ears to the base of his tail. the buck put his head down and was shakin it back and forth. the only way it ended is by my buddy yelling to another friend in the truck waiting to pick him up what was going on....so he drove the truck out in the field and ran the buck off. he swears to this day if the truck wouldn't have been there he would have been history.

this is gonna sound like a pretty convenient answer but he had a case of the flu but was still determined to get out....he was leaving his bow and fanny pack in the treestand so he didn't have to waste the energy lugging it up and down every day. after a few days when he felt better he went back to business as usual and packed everything to and from the stand. its funny that u ask because that was the very same question that i asked him.
