RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
I shot at a buck 4 times one day with my bow.Watched him come in from a cornfield about 150 yrds away, he walked past at about 15 yrds and stopped in an opening, I drew, aimed, fired and the arrow went in front of him.He ran about 5 yrds, turned around and came back, he started sniffing my arrow sticking up out of the ground so I knocked another one, put the pin behind his shoulder and shot again, this one took him right behind the head in the spine and dropped him like a rock.I couldnt figure out what the hell was going on and decided to put another one in him.Hit him clear back in front of the hind legs this time.Im kinda freking out at this point, I had only killed 2 other deer with a bow and had no problem doing it.Stuck my last arrow and and started drawing back, I was so rattled it fell off the string and went to the ground.I climbed down, got it, and walked over close as i could get and shot it, this one went where it was supposed to.Found out later my rest had come lose, the broadheads were hitting the riser when i shot and deflecting the arrow all over the place.:(Bright side to this day I check things out carefully everytime i get in a stand and make sure nothings moving that shouldnt be.

RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
I have a question for everyone who said 1? are you hunting in thicker areas or have a good sitting spot to shot from, ie blind, tree stand etc?
most i have ever shot was 4 with gun (hit him twice) and 4 with bow was hit all four times...first shot got one lung, second and third got two lungs and the last was a neck and killed it...i don't like to see animals suffer and am a still hunter on flat ground in CA...open areas, and hunting from ground leaves little to no blodd trail due to shot placement is horizontal through the body so the cavity has to be full of blood before you get a decent blood trail...terrian sux for tracking as well...that is why i shot 4 times with a bow......my reasoning for a gun was that it was the biggest blacktail i had ever seen was 18 with more buck fever then i can describe...first shot and last shot hit the deer...second two never made contact |

I hate to see an animal suffer any longer than necessary. |

RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
One time - in 1992 - one of the guys made a bad shot on a nice buck. It was a Hind Quarter shot - an he knew he messed up on the shot. The deer ran into a swamp. Rather than follow it - he came back to camp to get help - and we set up 3 guys around the swamp while he and my uncle trailed it. There was alot blood, and they thought they would find it dead - but such was not the case and the deer jumped from its bed - and bolted. I was in a tall pine tree at the end of the swamp - and I heard them yell that they jumped it. When it came by me it was really moving and dodging - and it was thick - spindly willows mostly. We when I was clear to shoot - I shot one, two, three and my last...four shots at the deer. He never slowed down - then he stopped past me - when I was staring at my empty gun - and looked around - then tipped over dead. Ihit him (12ga) all 4 times behind the shoulder - but you never would have known. With all the thick trees - I assummed I could be missing, or hitting brush.

RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
It was the 2005 season and I had a doe at about 40 yards and it took 3 shots. I was using an old weaver with the post and crosshair with the post extending above the horzontal line. In my excitement I aimed with the top of the crosshair instead of the top of the post, so I put two shots over her back. After the second shot, I was thinking something isn't right, so used the top of the post, and BOOM, down she went.

RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
1 shot, 1 kill. I try not to shoot more than once, unless I absolutely have to.
