RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
My first Pa deer in 1969 I took 6 rounds from my 30-30 to down him , he kept coming toward me and I kept shooting I think he finally dropped about 8 or 10 yards from me, it started snowing, I put my rifle on my army coat and folded it over the rifle while I field dressed it and it snowed so hard for 20 minutes that I almost didnt find my coat and rifle, but that 130 lb buck slid right down the mountain with the greatest of ease. Never ever forgot that one my first...

Chuck Norris doesn't need shots to kill a deer, the deer falls over dead just by looking at chuck norris.

RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
5 shots at a mule doe this year, and ended up not even hitting it, turned out that when i had slipped on the ice earlier that day the butt of my gun hit the ice and nocked the scope way off.

The most with a gun is 2...I think. I can't remember shooting anymore than that with a gun.
HOWEVER...I did shoot a buck 6 (STOP LAUGHING) times with a bow. I hit him pretty well with the first shot...but only got one lung. He did a big circle and came right back to the same place. I was flustered and hit him smack in the shoulder bone with the second. The 3rd, 4th and 5th were at him as I snuck up on him after bloodtrailing. The last was while he was badly hurt and bedded. I hate to even tell that story.[:@] Good news is that this happened 20+ yrs ago...and I've only had a couple other times with a bow where a second shot was required, and these were follow ups to spine shots. |
RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
ORIGINAL: quiksilver I swear I shot a box of shells at a doe one evening in rifle season. It was the last day at deer camp, when a snow squall came through around lunchtime, putting a fresh coating of snow on the ground. I had a doe tag to burn. I got way off the beaten path, still-hunting through the hollows, tip-toeing up the creekbeds, trying to catch a doe under the dark hemlocks that line the streams. Sure enough, I caught a flicker, and made eye contact with a lead doe. The second our eyes met, she was gone. I got an opening about 150 out, and got one in her, but too far back, and low. Right rear leg, blown off just below the steaks. She never missed a step. I cycled the bolt and took a clean miss at 250. I kept tracking her, and she was staying 200+ ahead, and with daylight fading and the truck ready to pull out of camp, I had to get her before dark, so I dogged her hard. She was putting down good blood, but only stopping every300-400 yards. She kept laying tight, then giving me running shots through too much clutter, and I couldn't squeeze the ball through. At least two more clean misses. Finally, I cut off her bloodtrail and beat her around the ridge, where I caught her bedded, watching behind her from a safe position. I had the wind this time. Finally, after about a half-dozen rounds, I got an open shot and she was down, and the drag was on. |
RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
45 yrs of hunting I've killed a lot of deer. Theres been some times when I was a young shotgunner that I would empty the magazine on one ahead of dogs. Since I've been a growed man tho I've mostly still hunted for white tail. Most of my deer are only shot once. I'm confident 99% of the time that my shot was well placed and I'll let em run off if they run. When I go to see where he/she dropped if they get up I'll put them down.

on time i shot a deer three times before he fell down... but other than that just once

RE: most shots taken to kill a deer?
I've had to put follow up shots on deer on 2 different occasions, other than that it's a 1 shot deal. So, I guess the most I've ever shot a deer was twice... twice.
