RE: Long range hunting! *VIDEO*
ORIGINAL: YooperMike If you like long range shooting, check out a video called "Beyond Belief" The guys that do a show called "Best of the West" on the Men's Channel made the video. There are a couple on there from over 1000 yards. Pretty amazing stuff. They also talk alot about how to become a better shot. |
RE: Long range hunting! *VIDEO*
I saw those vidios a couple years back on the outdoor channel. My reference to silhouette shooting is just to point out that I know rifles and what little things like a 10 mph cross wind somewhere between the shooter and the target can mean a complete miss. I have seen some very good rifle shots miss targets that they usually hit. However when you miss a target you laugh and try again. Animals are not tatgets to see if you can hit them at any range. And Peta and the boys love to see extra sport built into killing something.
Long range shooting is fun but best kept to targets and wars. Nobody is perfect at any range, when they start showing some real world results, then they might have a little credablility in my book. However like I said before, you won't see their mistakes. |

Just a quick note on the observation that they may have been shooting over a road in the video. I was in Switzerland a couple of years ago. On the way into the plant we were working at we drove through a military rifle range. Meaning we were on a major road that was running through a low area, the shooting area was on one side and the targets were on the other (elevated of course).

I bet PETA loves this. The hunters on these clips seem to prove themselves pretty well |

And for all you know, it could have been three shots, three kills. We don't know, and yet we're here fighting amongst ourselves when there are FAR more pressing issues like keeping the Democrats from taking the presidency in the next election.

Yes deer are shot at and lost at much shorter distances. You bet. The difference is that it's very possible to consistently score good first shot hits at the shorter distances if you practice a bit. The fact that some people screw up at shorter distances is a reflection on them not the task at hand. And no one addressed what I said earlier that proves to me that what these guys are doing isn't hunting, it's target shooting. A hunter wants to get as close as possible to his prey. I'd love to kill every buck I take at 50 yards if it were possible. No hunter wants to have tomake a long shot. Backing out to 800, 900 or a 1000 yards on purpose just to see if you can still make the shot is not hunting. It's target shooting. |

Elections come and go. Our ethics are here to stay. Like I said, nobody is perfect. They will have their share of screw ups which is magnified my the fact that this kind of shooting just invites trouble that is uncalled for. If a decent bow hunter can take deer at 5-20 yards, why should someone shoot 750 yards at a critter?. I was a hunting guide for a dozen years and peolpe who tried those kind of shots never hunted with me again. I seldom OKed shots beyond three hundred yards and then only for a few hunters that I had seen shoot.
I won't harp on it anymore but its an issue that stirs my coals. |

I agree.

Couldthe "Ethical Shot Police" please inform me how far I am allowed to shoot with my rifle at a deer. What is the farthest I am allowed to shoot to be deemed a good "ethical" hunter?
