Trespassers..!
Well on one of my preseason scouting trips i noticed a stand that wasnt there before... and i dont like when people put there stuff on my land without asking..i mean if they would just ask i might let them hunt there. what would you guys do...i left a note for the guy
|
RE: Trespassers..!
I'd take the stand down!!
|
RE: Trespassers..!
i was thinking of doing that but we live right there and he would know its us cuz we are the only ones huntng there and then we would be hated by them
|
RE: Trespassers..!
The note was a good start, if there's a further trespass I'd let the local sheriff handle it, or the game warden if poaching is suspected.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
I would take the stand down and put it at the base of the tree. He would definately get the hint and then maybe come talk to you with an excuss about how he didnt know where the line was. Or he would just pack up and leave to tresspass on someone elses land.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
I'd leave a polite note and discuss it with him instead of going off half-cocked. The last time i found a stand on my land, it turned out to be a new neighboring landowner who had misjudged the property boundaries. I played it cool and we now get along fine AND I have full access to his surrounding 140 acres of land.

RE: Trespassers..!
I have had this problem a couple of times years ago. Someone put a wooden ladder stand on my property. I removed the stand and this person never came back. I also nailed a posted sign on the tree the stand was on. I think he got the hint. The second time didn't go as smoothly. I knew the person who put a ladder stand on my cousins land which I lease. It is right next to my property. I hid the stand in a thicket. A week later one of my large stands was drug out of a clearing into the middle of a logging road. He didn't realize he did me a favor though. I had already planned on moving that stand. He drug it out with a horse. He then put up a box stand on my leased land. A storm came through and blew the stand down. I swear it wasn't me. He, thinking I did it, retaliated by stealing my gate to the property. That was the last straw. I confronted him nicely as possible and let him know he could not hunt the property. I had one more run in with him later and that was it. His family bought the land that borders my cousins and I get along with them great now. If I had just talked to him in the beginning we could have avoided the whole mess. We respect each others property now. This was about 12 years ago and today we all get along fine. In fact they rarely even hunt their property now. The point I'm getting at is talk to the person nicely as possible and let them know they are not allowed on your property. If they come back then you may have to take action. I have since nicely chased two pair of turkey hunters off my property. They have never come back. I was nice. I can be an ass, but there is a time for that. I have not had a problem with a trespasser in years. Not saying it won't happen again, but if it does I will be civil about it. Only when I need to be an ass will I be one. We have a strict no trespassing law in LA. You no longer need posted signs or paint. It is now taken more seriously. The new law has helped because there is now no way a trespasser can talk his way out of it if you want to prosecute.

RE: Trespassers..!
i would of taken it down and if he put another one up i would take it down too!!!
|
RE: Trespassers..!
You guys are way too nice!!!!! If he had the guts to put the stand up on property which he clearly had no buisness on, I would have taken the stand down and called the game warden up and given the stand tothe game warden.. Then I would have left a note, stating: if you want your stand back, contact the game warden. Tresspassing is just sheer disrespect for one another, and I cannot and will not tolerate it. Even if this was a neighbor, what does this say about him... By rights, you did not take the stand (steal it), you just gave it to someone who has the authority to deal with the situation... and if that person feels that he/she had done nothing wrong by placing the stand there, then they'll have no problem retrieving it through the local game warden.... Come on, what does it take to ask for permission... And if you are a diehard deer hunter and your neighbor knows that,, it would infuriate me even more.. I put a lot of time and money into deer hunting and for some one to do that,,, I wouldn't worry about the way they felt, they better worry about the way I feel when I see them!!!!!!!!

RE: Trespassers..!
Well, being too nice got me an additional 140 acres of some of the best hunting ground in southern Illinois to play on. I wanna see a show of hands from folks who wouldturn that down just tostay true tothegood old zero tolerance for tresspass rule.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
I like your way of handling that problem I know I can always us an extra 140 acres to hunt plus you took an unfortunate situation and turned it into a good deal for both of you.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
Our80 acresis posted and i do not suffer trespassers lightly. The neighbor allows us to hunt on his adjacent 120 acres and his grand kids hunt on our place. This is the most desireable deer acreage in the area. A few years ago i ran off an OK City cop who was quail hunting on our place. He started to give me some trouble but finally turned and left.

RE: Trespassers..!
My BF has run into this in the past. He believes in 3 strikes your out. Will warn 2 x's " No tresspass; don't come back " .. Third x he catches you.. He calls the local C.O. Hunting license lost and fines...

RE: Trespassers..!
I'm not generous enough to give 3 strikes. I'll give 'em one chance because I'm a benevolent type of guy who understands that people make mistakes. But beyond that, I've just gotten myself a new deer stand[:@]

RE: Trespassers..!
Take it!...Most ethicalhunters use a marking tool to inscribe their name and or their address on them. If it's marked, report it! If it isn't, they have no proof it's theirs. It's yours!!!!!
|
RE: Trespassers..!
I still think that Kevin1s idea of pooping on their stands would kind of cut the difference between being nice and being mean.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
Well, Kevin does a six pack of beer and three plates of ham and beans at every meal. So, when ya gotta go, ya gotta go[:@]
|
RE: Trespassers..!
What I typically have done is to remove it and leave a note that their treetsand can be picked up at the local police station. I get a case number from the officer that I can follow up on if the stand is claimed. And when I have their name and address, I file charges for recreational tresspass in civil court to recoup a $500/day and a 6 day minimum recreation access fee I require for entry onto my property.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
Has that ever actually worked. Not looking to argue, just curious.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
i had a ladder stand on my property and i took it down cause i knew it belonged to a trespasser trying to sneak in and out to get a late season buck then just this passed saturday there was a brand new hang on there so i took it to!!! The local sherrifs department said it was fine so as long as the guy keeps triying to put one up i will keep taking them down. He is just saving me money cause now i dont have to buy them and i will just put them up in another woods and use them.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
Regardless to the legality/trespass issues, I would never want to be in or use a stand that wasn't either built by me or bought by me (or my buddies).
It's called karma and I don't want any bad karma when hunting. Know what I mean? Bad karma would = falling out of stand, falling while climbing into stand, see no deer from stand, etc. Pooping on someone's stand? I have never tried it but imagine it would be a little risky. I'd hate to explain to someone why I'm layingin the woods with my pants down, crap in my drawers and a broken pelvis or something. But I am VERY suprised that most responses have been so nice (which I do agree with). Where's the responses of BOOBY TRAP IT! BURN IT! DESTROY IT! ? |

RE: Trespassers..!
I sure am glad that I don't live next to some of you! Your responses are rediculous in the extreme. I don't like tresspassers but come on. Ask them to leave. If they won't leave call the law.

RE: Trespassers..!
Shatodavis, If you work all year planting food plots and mowing them, maintaining treestands, trimming underbrush and so on... Thenlets say, some person comes and puts a treestand up illegally and arrows a 180" typical out of it. Then would you be so passive,,,,,,,, because lets face it, we are talking about finding an empty treestand, but nobody knows if the days previous, the hunter had harvested a deer out of it......... To me its stealing,, not anything structurally,, but the stealing of time,,, the time spent in laying out, setting up and maintaining a specific area... and that I think is worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God help the person I catch trespassing on my property, my friends property, and my neighbors property. We live in a tight community and know, who has permission and who doesn't!!! Hence the screen name whitetailcrazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Trespassers..!
Just post a sign on it or take it down. Don't steal it though. Give the guy a chance to reconcile himself.
|
RE: Trespassers..!
note was a good idea. if he wont take it down or just moves it, i'd let the sheriff or warden know. after that, i'd say you got urself a new stand.

RE: Trespassers..!
I have some experience in this area! But proper way to handle this goes like this: Post the property at all gates and at given lengths down neighboring fences.Patrol the property if possible and and make contact with adjoining property owners to disscuss boundries and become friends. If someone is found and no game violations have occured on property talk to them to see if it was honest mistake coming in in the dark or if they are just dumb and can't read the posted signs.Diplomacy first,if you find someone hunting in the wrong that means they have a weapon...if you don't have one on you that means theres a disadvantage and being nice is the safest idea!In Texas land doesn't have to be posted. Here on private property the land owner or agent can file crimanal tresspass charges;Class C missdeameanor punishable by 20-200 dollar fine-no jail.No come the firearm added to the mix! That bumps it up to a Class A which means they can and usally do jail your butt and if convicted can be up to 1 year jail time and possible 4000 buck fine! I had a misscommunication in the past and plead mine down to Class B with time served and $1000 fine plus attorney fees! Try diplomacy first!

RE: Trespassers..!
I have 640 acres of my own to hunt on. Out of the 640 I have 160 that is my honey hole for hunting to which I plant and have posted. All the surrounding neighbors know that is a no, no to go there. They are allowed to hunt on my other properties. As well I get to hunt on theirs except their honeyhole. That gives me about another 5000 acres, plus crown

RE: Trespassers..!
I got a note from a landowner once.i got permission from the guy leasing the ground for farming but he failed to mention the landowner himself was kind of a bunny hugger. He lives a couple hours north of here and only comes around about once a year, he noticed my stand, nailed a polite note underneath it asking me to pull it and I did.The guy that leased the place had several hundred more acres he lets me hunt so it wasnt worth making an issue out of.Pissed the leaser off because he thought he had hunting rights in his lease, I never bothered to find out if he did or not, wasnt worth losing more ground over.Id go with the note first, confiscating his stand second
