TxCowboy, while I uderstand what you are saying, I point out one eliment that you have left out. "I" am speaking of pets. They are not the same IMHO because of the attachment and greif that will be inflicted. I have not elevated their worth but AM taking into consideration the feelings of other. REGARDLESS of who is to blame.

Would I shoot a pet of any sort that endangers me, my 6yr old daughter or any human? You bet your butt. We are not talking about that though now are we.

All I have asked for through this is for people to try to be creative and offer any alternatives. It appears none exist in the minds of the viewers here. Alas this conversation will continue to be a question of to kill or not to kill.

RE: Deer hunting dog killers

We have lease laws where I live and I'm expected to keep my dog home or contained on my property, which I do. When a neighbors dog or a strange dog crosses my property, if I'm near the house, I place a few shots from the 22 under his belly and they usually get the idea. I don't know if it is against the law or not and don't care. It is no secret to my neighbors, I'll give you one courtesy call, keep your dog home or have the hell scared out of it.It also works for cats. My labs are my best friends, but my neighbors dogs aren't and I'm not baby sitting someones dog two days waiting for the dog wardon to come!
If I lived in the southwest or open country, I would probably shoot an unattended dog as they are only going to cause trouble for someone down the road, they are probably hungry and would think nothing of eating a rabid animal or attacking someones pet.

One question I don't hear being asked much is:

What is the law? Does the law allow you to shoot these animals? It's like saying I'll shoot every coyote or fox I see. I just can't do that. There are seasons and rules about shooting anything except in self defense. Once we take the law into our own hands the antis will have more ammunition than ever.

nny243, I live 300 miles SE of you so i guess youe dog won't get this far,LOL, but sometimes you have to make a decision yourself. When we had milk cows and a dog was in the pasture, there was no question about what to do, it was just a matter of getting a good clean shot and a hole dug. regards..

I haven't had dogs bother me while hunting. However, when I was living at home on the farm, we had a pack of six dogs (six pack I guess) from our neighbors about 1 1/2 miles away coming in and raising heck. They were told on several occasions to get them under control, but they didn't care. One evening six came in and only four left. I never did see those four again. They must have thought they were in dog hell with that .308 booming. LOL Don't think I am a dog hater, I love dogs. Some of my best hunting memories are pheasant hunting with my golden.

Something for all hunters to consider.

RE: Deer hunting dog killers

Hunt3r, I understand what you are saying also but I still have to disagree. Yes, I understand that a dog or cat can become "part of the family" so to speak and people become very attached to pets. Completly understandable. However, if the owners really cared for their pets they would keep them at home for two reasons; 1) to keep them from bothering and harrassing other people, including hunters, 2) they'd keep them at home for their own safety. You wouldn't let you small child go play in the street or roam around without permission in the neighbors woods by himself? In my opinion, a hunter giving a dog owner a coutesy call is just that, a courtesy, and not required. It is the owner's reponsibility to keep their dog off other people's land.

I sat on my deer stand the 2nd week of gun season one morning. Starting before sunrise I heard dogs barking. I assumed it must have been dogs at someone's house far away and the sound was just carrying down in the creek bottom field I was hunting. After daylight the barking got closer and I could tell they were in the ajdoing landowners property. This landowner and us have a QDM managment plan and I knew that he doesn't have any dogs and if he did they wouldn't be running thru the property. It was obvious that one of the dogs was a hound because of the sound of his bark. On and on this went for almost 4 hrs. They would get close, then far as they ran and barked. As you might guess I never saw any deer. As I was leaving my stand the 3 dogs ran out of the creek and into the field. And as I suspected one of them was a hound. One was a black lab, and one was some other type of dog I didn't recongnize. Only the lab had a collar. They all had their noses to the ground running when I started whistling at them. They seemed as shocked to see me as I was to see them. I tried to get up to them to read the tag on the one dog with a collar. None of them would let me get close enough. They ran off into the woods and went on barking. That was sighting #1. Sighting #2: Two days later my mom calls and tells me that the samde 3 dogs have crossed their pasture twice. Sighting #3: My mom sees the dogs again this time chasing a deer at full speed across the pasture. The dogs were right behind it.

That is 3 different days and 4 different actual sightings of the dogs. I'd say that is more than enough chances. Sooo, I'd like to know what should I do? I have attempted to get close to the dogs and they will not let me. Only one of the owners put a collar on their dog so it is the only one that it would do many good to catch. I have no idea whose dogs they are. So what should I do? Please someone give me a reasonable non-lethal, non-cruel alternative. I'm listening.

Bow Hunter, <u>excellent</u> link!!! Thank you!

Lets take a look at a couple quotes from that piece.

Here is what Tonya Sharp the district wildlife manager for Teller County said:
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Sharp said that only after all efforts to contact a dog owner have failed will the dog will be shot and killed. “I hate to do it, I love dogs,” she said. “I issue a citation to the owner first.”
<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

WOW! Am I reading that right? A Colorado Div. of Wildlife district mangager shoots dogs because they chase deer? I guess they are unethical too and just don't have compassion for people's pets?

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> “Years ago, one winter we had two dogs kill 12 elk in one day,” Eyre said. “This is indicative of what happens when dogs chase wildlife.”
<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

What? I thought ya'll said dogs where just doing what dogs do and nothing but my day of hunting was ruined? Looks like I was right to say that dogs do kill deer.

If this issue is big enough for the Colorado Wildlife Div. to put an article like this on their website and state that they will shoot dogs, then I think I can be justified in doing the same. Especially since Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. isn't doing anything to help us like Colorado is.
