Scariest moment in the woods?

Earlier this season i was sitting behind a log pile waiting for the sun rise andI kept hearinganimals walk through the woods around me. We have coyotes and cougars in the area (though most people dont believe we have cougars) so Im always a little apprehensive sitting on the ground with only my rifle for the hour before sunrise. Anyways, I keep hearing the deer and night critters walking all around me breaking twigs and stuff then it goes dead silent. Because im fairly new to hunting (going on 2+ years),I dont have a lot of experience with wildlife and whatnot so I instantly assume that since everything goes quite, that there is a HUGE blood thirsty predator somewhere in my area and probably right behind me ready to pounce on poor little me. Now, im not sure what to do because if he doesnt see me, then i dont want to move, but dangit, I dont want to get mauled in the back so what am I supposed to do? I didnt get much of a chance to think before the blood thirsty beast lunged at my backside, going for the spine attack at the neck, and then bounced off like a1 pound hacky sack. I got so pale and jumped so fast you would have thought i was white ligtening on the move. I could have cut carpet with the dancing moves ishowed to the wildlife in the area. Turns out a covey/flock/whatever of small birds were nesting in the wood pile that i was sitting with my back to and Im guessing one of the birds didnt realize that i wasnt just part of the scenery. So he tried to land on the inside of my shoulder and thus caused me to darn near dirty my britches and scream like a little girl. The good news though is that 2 hours later a cute little deer walked out and i filled my freezer.

RE: Scariest moment in the woods?

Although I didn't realize how scary it was until after the fact, I'd have to say being bluff charged by a moose was my scariest moment!
I was sitting on an old railroad grade when a big cow and her-bull calf came up behind me. I heard them for a good minute before I saw them, so I was crouched down looking at where the noise was coming from when I saw them and realized they were not deer. As soon as I saw them I stood up to get a better look. The cow saw me immediately and stopped, however the calf didn't see me at first and wastrying to see why thecow had stopped. When the calf's head came out from behind the tree and saw me he put his head down and started right at me. He didn't run, but was definitely coming my way and not slowly. After about 15 steps in my direction he stopped and just starred at me for about 20 seconds then turned and went back to the cow! They both ran off after that! It was a mere 9 paces from me when it stopped! I remember thinking one more step and I shoot, but never got scared, until I replayed the whole sequence in my head! When I fully realized what happened, that's when the shakes started!
I even had to bring my dad to the spot where it happened, and show him the tracks! He told me, if it were him, we would have been eating moose for diner!

Age 8, the first time my dad bugled in an elk. it was a spike about 15 yards away. All i could think about was it goring me with its horns.

Age 14, chased by a moose and all I had was my bow. Found out that I could climb trees.

Age 16,taking a #2 and watching my roll of toilet paper roll down the hill.

Age 19, my dad and I got caught in a nasty windstorm. had to dodge falling trees.

Age 20,I am in a new area that I have never hunted before opening day. The sun is setting and shooting light is gone. I grab my first flashlight, dead. Grab my spare, dead. Grab my spare spare, dead. Spent the night in the woods shivering curled up in the fetal I am going to die position. Now I pack a wind up flashlight with my other 6 flashlights and I check to make sure it is there and working when I leave the rig everytime. I also pack new packages of batteries.

Age 20, later that year my dad and I got caught in another nasty windstorm.

Age 23, out deep in the woods in the cold winter. I am on my friends 4 wheeler and it is so cold that it won't start. No problem I will pull start it, what no pull start. Push starting is out of the question because of the deep snow. Walked for 11 hours in the snow and had to be hospitalized.

I love the woods and would do every one of those scenarios over again except for the no fashlight night. That one really got to me and still affects me till today.

Probably for it would have to be my first time predator hunting at night when the best light I could get my hands on was a 2D maglite.

I was sitting about 10 yards inside some woods calling and calling and calling and after a little bit I could hear footsteps and leaves crunching from what seemed like every angle but I couldn't see very far at all. It was pretty intense to know I was attracting some meat eating nasties but couldn't see them.

Twice, Once on my very first deer hunt I was walking down the side of a hill where my buddy told me to sit. About a third of the way down I had a deer blow at me. The other I was hunting the same area and was walking down a fire lane through a pine groveand turkeys busted off the roost. I guess one other time too while walking down the same fire lane a covey of quails flushed right beside me but that wasn't as bad because it was daylight at the time.

When I was about 13 or so my dad and I were Spring Gobbler huntin' (on National Forest land) and had a Gobbler hang up on us after working with him for about 2 hours (he had hens) Dad and I started out of the woodsand a guy who owns landthat boarders the NF stopped us. He said he had been listening to us call all morning on his property. My dad calmly explained that we were no where nearhis property andwould gladly take him back to where we were set up and show him where we were sitting. He startedcussing us and pointed his shotgun and my dad and myself. It's a pretty scary situation thinking "Well one of us going to die but I don't think he'll get bothof us before we can get him"...

I heard later that he did the same thing to another guy and instead of it ending peacefully like it did w/us,the accuser ended up w/his shotgun broke in half and beat almost to death w/it.

One time I was pre-season deer scouting with my grandfather when suddenly he stopped and had a really scared looking face so I stopped and just said what? He goes 'there's a grizzly about 15 feet behind you." My heart friggin dropped, turns out he was joking and he laughed his ass off the rest of the day.

I thought that might be happening to me and my hunting partner one day. The smell of death was overcoming as we walked through some tall grass along a pine grove. We found a small 4 pointer with a arrow stuck in it's front shoulder. It didn't make the jump over a barbed wire fence, got caught up and died. I backed off while my buddy was gaging and puking cutting that small rack off. It was pretty nasty.

Hi guys. This is my first post; this seems like a reallygreat site. I think my scariest moment in the woodscame about5 months ago (give or take) on a hog hunt. I was running through some thickets after the dogs when I noticed I had a bunch of flies (or so I thought) buzzing around me. Then I started getting stung. Yep, those "flies" were hornets. All I could do was run straight through the briers and thickets screaming and flayaling my arms. They got me over 20 times in various parts of my body, some more "sensitive than others" if you know what I mean. Not to mention I was torn up from the briers and devils thorns. I've been stung by wasps, bumble bee's and pretty much anything else, but that wasmy first time being attacked by hornets. Man do those little sun-of-a-guns pack a mean punch.

a couple years ago, first time ever hunting by myself, i was walkin to where i was gonna sit. i was about 25 yards from my sit and all the sudden a pheasant goes flyin out of a tree right above me and scared the sh*t out of me. then not 30 seconds later i start hearing crashing through the woods. im think oh f*** a bear, and its coming right towards me!! but it turned out to be a really big doe and i shot her from about 10 yards away and we had a nice full freezer!

RE: Scariest moment in the woods?

In the early 90's I was bow hunting in farm country, my first year on this farm. It was an evening hunt, after work, and I was standing on a huge limb of a huge burr oak. One of the neigborhood residents came tromping through the woodlot with a large revolver in a shoulder holster. I knew who he was, and I knew he was looking for me, but I also knew that I was solid in my permission to be where I was. He passed by without seeing me, but then made a big circle and came back through and saw me. He never drew on me, but he did grab the butt of his gun once. He threatened me very specifically and very aggressively, and forced me to leave. I was crapping my pants. This guy was nuts. It wasn't his land, and he didn't have a leg to stand on, but that didn't matter. I made a phone call later, and got everything straigtened out, and could still hunt there. I reported the incident to the sheriff, but didn't file a complaint.

My scariest was some 7 seven years back. I huntiong in NE WI with bow in hand. I had shot a nice seven pt. out of a pit my unclr dug. I know it sounds weird but it worked. I feild dressed him and took him out of the woods. I was only gone from the woods 25 mins. My father and I went back to find my arrow. When we got there we found the arrow. I showed my dad the pit. When we got there a 500lb plus black bear had come in and caved in the pit blind. If I hadn't shot my deer when I did. I could have been face to face and probaly deadby a bear. This same bear was seen down the road carrying dead deer off the side of the hwy.

RE: Scariest moment in the woods?

For those who haven't heard myDou Dead Men Story.

I have actually found to dead people; one while hunting, the other fishing.

While fishing one evening, I found a boat overturned on the small private lake I live on. There are 4 other houses on the lake, and the kids across the lake were having a huge party/bon fire. I figured some drunk kids came out swimming, tipped the boat and left it there. The next morning, about 6 a.m., I got up to do some pike fishing. Heading to my honey hole, I noticed something scrap along side the boat. I look behind the boat into the fog and see the elbow of a person. This was by far, the scarriest thing of my life. Afterwards, I called the police and all. They went looking for it with divers and things, and persisted that there was no dead person, just 2 swans. They asked me, ARE YOU SURE IT WASN'T a swan. Thinking I don't know the difference, gosh.

For the Hunting bit:
Last spring I was up in Northern Michigan and was hunting some state lanf for Spring Turkey. Figures We were having no luck. We were just camping in a tent. The day before, we had heard of a man "getting lost" in the state land around there. They hadn't located his car or anything though. My dad and I split up for the noon-time hunting and stalking. Shortly I had walked across a small pine plantation and thought I saw a person laying down. I circled around them and hollered once so they didn't shoot me or get scared. Needless to say, I had to take the police out there and he wasn't lost. It was a suicide.

I did that once! Me and a good buddy of mine were out grouse hunting one time and he had stopped to pee, well i heard some rustling around in the taller grass by a brush pile and figured it might be a pheasant or grouse, well to my avail I remember diving onto my belly and covering my head cause a big ol' tom was flying right at my head! When I stood up i looked over at my buddy laughing his butt of with his pants around his ankles! Good times good times.

Not really scare, more of a suprise. I was pheasant/bird hunting, and nearly stepped on a woodcock (I think) before it flew off at full speed. By the time I raised my gun, he was outta there!

My buddy arrowed a bear cub (he wanted a cub to mount) and momma bear was still around. He radio'd me and I went to his stand to help him out/scare momma away/maybe arrow momma. I get about 50 yards from him and I see the sow, she is pacing back and forth, ears tucked way back. To make a real long story much shorter, she mock charged me twice. After the second charge I flung an arrow at her (in self defense) and it hit a tree beside her and she got scared and bailed out. My buddy climbed down, grabbed the cub and we booked for the truck watching our back trail the whole way. Pretty good adrenaline rush.

Nothing really all that bad for me, but IMO them woods can be a scary place when it's pitch dark and you don't have your light. I forgot mine in the truck a couple of weeks ago and had to walk out without the help of a flashlight of any kind. Thankfully I was hunting private property that I know very, very well and was able to walk towards the light of the house on the hill.
I love the woods, but not in the dark with no light.

I have not getting scared yet unless something touch me in the dark. I
do not use flashlight except need to. I know the same trail well since 5 years. I can not hear so I do not know what's going on around me.

I invited my 15 yrs old nephew to huntat end of hunting seasonand he told me that there were lots lots of dog barkings. But I had good hunting season for 5 years in row. YUM! YUM!

2 years ago i was sitting up against a tree in some tall grass calling in a herd of elk during bow season and i heard something walking only about 5 feet from me so i knocked an arrow and rested the bow on my lap then suddenly 5 feet in front of me out walks a wolf and it stopped and starred right at me, i figured by the time i raised my bow he would have been all over me so i didnt move and sure enough he kept on walking, i had to change my underwear after that.

3 years ago i was walking a fence line when suddenly a bear came running out of the trees at me and stopped about 10yds from me and growled i brought by 30.06 up and all i seen in my scope was fur and eyes i was about to squeeze the trigger when he turned, ran 10yds stopped starred and took off for good, once again lucky i had an extra pair of boxers in my bag. Then 15mins later i shot my first elk so it all worked out.

Speaking of all the dead persons being found, once a very long time ago when my grandfather was out with his children deer hunting they walked up a small tent, looked in and found a human corpse. So he called the police and sure enough they took his kids and interogated everyone individually, he then vowed to never call if he found another, and now neither will I.

why would you not call a dead body in?
what would you do with the body? What would you do if they found the body later? because if they find the body later and they find out that you did what was done to the body its gonna be worse than interogation they will arrest you for helping with a murder.
it would not be a good idea to not call in a dead body.

Mine was my first time out bow hunting, I think I was 16. We followed an old experienced buck hunter out into the woods at 4am then he dropped me off at my spot and told me he'd come back for me around noon for lunch break then he took off into the woods to get to his stand. About a half an hour later I could've sworn that I seen two white gloves about 30 yards away in the tall grass only to find out later that what I seen was two white tails, ha ha. Well I did not move at all and by the time sun came up and I did get my chance at a deer, I couldn't stand up because I've been sitting in the indian position for so long my legs fell asleep on me.

Just to touch on those cougars, I hunt in the U.P. and yes, they are a very scary thought when I head out before light.

RE: Scariest moment in the woods?

Happend in 1990. I was bowhunting with a friend on a private farm we had permission to hunt on. I waited 'til dark to climb out of the stand and go get my friend. When I get to him, he says he shot a good sized doe. His tracking skills bit the big one, so I asked him to point me in the right direction. I found the blood trail with my flashlight and began to track. The blood trail went on for quite a while, so now I'm asking him exactly where did you hit this doe? He tells me "a bit far back". It is now pitch black and I'm yards away from entering the swamp with only a minimag flashlightin my hands. I foundthe spot where she stopped and rested. As I'm kneeling down examining the blood for signs of lung vs liver I hear some extra pairs of feet a short distance away from us. I tell my friend to be quiet and listen. Now its all quiet. I start tracking again and all of the sudden I hear those damn feet again and I stop myself and grab him to stop and listen! Now I can also hear the breathing and low growls of what sounds like more than one animal. I gotta say at this point my heart is doin' 260+. I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up!The fight or flight syndrome is kickin' in and as I point that puny minimag at the sounds, several pairs of yellow eyes look back at me and growl a bit louder. The beam of the light just lit up enough of the woods to see we were outnumbered by several coyotes tracking that same deer.
I turned to my friend and said" start yellin' as loud as you can and follow me" We yelled so friggin' loud and made a semi circle around those 'yotes and boogied through swamp water knee deep and headed for the nearest cow pasture. Musta' ran 200 yds before we even stopped to look back. That was on a Saturday night. We came back on Sunday and found the doe, mostly eaten.
Stopped at the hunting store on the way home and bought a much brighter flashlight!
