I had this exact thing just happen to me last week. I explained the whole hunt in another post.http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1807511
I shot the deer at 150 yards and he dropped and then after several seconds got up and ran and immediately bedded. I jumped him once and left him go till morning. When I found him in the morning he was stiff but very much alive. I was able to shoot him in his bed and finish him off. When I skun him out I hit him just below the spine and just above the shoulded. An inch either way and he would have died instantly!
