RE: Deer mounts
You will probably pay between 300-350 dollars,, but wherever you go make sure the taxidermist has the capes professionally tanned, or tans them himself. This takes time,, and will make your mount last much longer. Some use a dry preserve, which is basically a powder that dries out the skin, and keeps it from rotting, but sometimes spots will still not be good, and hair can fall out after some years, if tanned, it is preserved forever, and will usually look better. If they say they will have it done for you in a month,, chances are, its not going to be tanned. There are guys in my area, who charge the same amount for a shoulder mount with dry preserve, as some good shops doing a tanned mount, and most guys dont know any different, until about 5-10 years down the road.
