There is no substitute for thermacell. I use it while bow hunting and gun hunting when needed. In some seasons it's a life saver. If you don't have one, get one now. This year has been extremely dry so there aren't the usual amount of mosquitoes in the woods, but I'll still be carrying one with me just in case. They don't spook deer like sprays will.

Thermacell works great if you're sitting still and the vapor can waft itself around your area. Not so good if you're walking/stalking or there is a little wind.
For a odorless spray on try Permanone or Permathrin. It's a product that you put on your CLOTHES ONLY...do not put it on your skin. It has a little odor when you first apply it, but dries odorless and does really good for skeeters, tics and chiggers...so I'm told by friends that have used it and by what I have read on this site. I found it in Wal-Mart last night...in the camping section...not where there other insect sprays are.

Repel Sportsman Max 40% Deet.About $3.50+ - at Wal Mart.Best stuff I've found. There is some gel out there at 99% Deet but its expensive and not practical for applying around ankles, waste area (chigger territory).

I keep 3 cans of the 40% in truck during summer for working on stands, shooting, checking cameras, fishing at night etc..The stuff will kill a horse.

I use it to keep the chiggers and horse flys off as much as skeeters.
I found you gotta spray yourself about every hour or more if your sweatin alot - at least to keep chiggers off..Anybody had a bad case of chiggers[:@] knows exactly where I'm comin from.

The 40% deet is awesome, but stinks bad enough not to use it while hunting...IMO. That is where the Permanone comes into play. Spray it on your clothes, let it dry and you're good to go. I've also been told that it will last through a couple of washing, but will have to experiment with that myself to see.

I took some stuff that was something like 90% or maybe even 100% deet to AK and it worked great. But what I have heard works best (from several acquantances in AK) if you're going to be around mosquitoes a lot is if you drink a cap full of vinegar every day. Eventually you get enough vinegar in your system that the mosquitoes will be able to smell it on your skin (humans can't smell it though) and they'll leave you alone. No spreay necessary.

I really don't use anything. Grew up in the back woods w/ mosquitos and black flies where it's really bad. Never had bugs as bad as spring/early summer anywhere else except Alaska. Sometimes I just question the stuff and think it's another thing that people buy b/c it's there. Also quite harmful to put on your body. I don't use anything b/c I kinda got used to having mosquitos and black flies around as a kid. Whenever someone is complaining about bugs I kinda just sit there and think to myself "what bugs, you don't even know about bugs".

All due respect Troutman - I live, fish, hunt in and around tidal and non tidal wetlands, marsh, ocean etc. We have some serious bugs. I'm fully aware on what these crtitters will do to flesh when its wet and/or been a warm wet season.

I use one kind of spray and only one andrarely use it while hunting.
