SEEING AND HEARING CROWS, NOT SEEING DEER
HAS ANYONE NOW OR IN THE PAST HAD A PROBLEM WITH ALOT OF CROWS MAKING THE NOISE THEY MAKE, AND IN RETURN NOT SEEING MANY OR NO DEER WHILE HUNTING?
MY SPOT WAS HOT FOR 4 YEARS, THEN LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR THE CROWS ARE ALLOVER AND WE ARE SEEING LESS OR NO DEER AT ALL. CAN THE CROWS MAKING ALL THE NOISE THEY DO SCARE THE DEER FROM A AREA THAT WAS ONCE HOT? |
RE: SEEING AND HEARING CROWS, NOT SEEING DEER
My uncle has had this happen to him. He thinks they are warning other animals of danger and giving him away. I think he is nuts, but he has had the same problem as you.

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY!!!! I THOUGHT THAT ALSO, BUT WHATS THE DANGER, I KNOW THEY DONT SEE ME, AT TIMES THEY LAND IN THE TREE IM IN, OR TREES NEARBY. ALSO I HEAR THEM FAR AWAY, THEN THEY FLY OVER TO MY AREA, DO THERE THING, FLY OFF, COME BACK. ITS JUST BEEN THE LAST 2 YEARS, OUT OF THE 6 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN HUNTING THIS AREA.

Thats funny. My uncle thinks that the crows will see you and then make as much racket crowing away as they can. Crows are protected in MN I think, otherwise my uncle would be shooting them left and right. He is pretty superstious though. I am glad I have not had that problem!

RE: SEEING AND HEARING CROWS, NOT SEEING DEER
I'm with starrmans uncle. I've had trouble with crows for about three years now. Its legal to hunt them in ny on fri. sat. sun. mon. I believe they do warn the other animals in the woods of danger. They may be just making the noise to warn there own but if the other animals hear it they probably know to stay away. they are a smart bird. I've also noticed if they're next to me making alot of noise I won't see deer that day.

CAN THE CROWS MAKING ALL THE NOISE THEY DO SCARE THE DEER FROM A AREA THAT WAS ONCE HOT? Yes, the usually flock in a group of 5. There are usually 4 cawing and flying around. This doesn't necessarily alert deer. But the 5th crow that is hiding that you didn't know was there. Cause it wasn't making a sound or crowing around with the other crows. Is the the watchmen crow. Once it spots anything that abnormal it alerts the other crows and then all 5 crows fly off alerting everything else in the woods that something there that doesn't belong. If deer see generally will not travel to the direction the crows were flying from. Crows are the alarm system of the wild outdoors. if you can wait it out for the next hr to 4 hrs the animal life will get back to moving but that doesn't mean your gonna see a deer anytime soon. |
crow fuss at anything, hawks owls, coyotes, foxes, bear just name it. maybe predators are your problem.

Some photos from yesterday out in the George Washington National Forest, along Route 42 by Elliott Knob in Augusta Co, Virginia...
It's just like the gist of this entire thread: N-O-T-H-I-N-G... :s14: (well, I mean... I did see a big, mama doe, running for her life at like Mach IV, white tail flapping behind her. But nonetheless,.... nothing!) Me with my Savage .308 rifle, taking a "selfie" before the 2 mile hike up the mountain trail. ![]() One of the main trails leading up to Elliott Knob. It's peaceful and quiet out in the GWNF, and you feel like you have all 1.8 million acres to yourself! ![]() All settled in. I actually got down on my hand and knees, and hunkered down under a cedar tree with the sun at my back, so a deer would get blinded trying to find me. ![]() |
Good luck Butch. Hope ya get a big one.

Other areas along the Blue Ridge Pkwy, Skyline Drive, etc...are better off, as the deer population ventured that way in search of food. But, guys were saying, that everyone learned of it, and that eastern section of the GWNF is crowded on weekends. I'll head out there during the week and see what I can see. |
