DING-DING-DING!!!!!!!!!!Something pegged out the rotten meter!
Let's see.......
Stolen deer while hunter has gun and should have a knife if the field?
One bullet hunter? (Barney Fife, maybe?)
Gutting 'em with a stick?
25-30" spread? (would probably put the deer in the top .5 percent of deer in the whole US of A!)

Hmmm...........
Perhaps if the last statement was true, the guy was just getting his $50,000 breeder buck back, AND that might account for thr reason you "GAVE" it back to him without a fight!

I hope you have learned something from the experience. 1) Take more ammo. next time. What in the world were you going to do if you wounded a deer and had nothing to finish it with, NOT COUNTING A SHARP STICK, and what if you would've missed, throw the gun at the next deer you see!! 2) Take a good sharp knife when hunting large game, it works better than any sharp stick ever did, even the indians would've used a knife if they had one!! 3) Hunt with a partner, not always necasary, BUT in this case, it would've been helpful! 4) Don't wait two years before deciding to do something about it!!
Sorry to hear your story, although it does have a few holes in it!! At this point, if you want it back, looks like money out of your pocket is your only choice!!
Live and learn and MOVE ON!!!

WOW ...this story kind of reminds me of the story my ol'e pappy use to tell me about when he was fishing and he hooked a MONSTER cat fish ...he did not land him so he didnt know just how big it really was but he said all he knew was that is was SO BIG that all he saw was eye balls on BOTH sides of the boat ! ...."Beam me up Scotty ..no intelligent life on THIS planet "

RE: deer stolen while in the field

We ran onto a fish & game guy while we were elk hunting. He was eating his lunch on top of a canyon. We started talking to him and he pointed at 3 guys that were packing elk quarters out of a steep canyon and he said they took his elk at gun point while he was feild dressing it and told him to leave or they would shoot him. He was waiting for them to finish packing the quarters out and he was going to reveal that he was ODFW and arrest them. So it does happen. I'm not sure about the "sharp stick" feild dressing thing, lol.
